I must start this by saying that I live in Tucson, AZ. However, this is about the attraction of our Mountaineers nationwide.
"Three golf games ago" a Mountaineer friend and I are playing golf here in Tucson. We both have WVU golf gear. Out of no where, we hear, "Let's go Mountaineers." Two groups behind us is a guy decked out in WV gear. We exchange chants and move on.
""Two golf games ago, I started talking to one of the course rangers". He is an AZ wildcat fan. BUT, he starts talking about my WV head covers and how much he likes the Mountaineers! He watches them on TV, and noted that, "They were down for a couple of years, but they are coming back. No one will want to play them. I really like them." He is a Rich Rod fan and thinks Rich Rod is a "winner". He was also aware that the Florida State coach and the Alabama coach are from WV.
Today, I was playing Dove Mountain, and I was wearing one of my WV shirts. Play was slow, and I offered to let a couple behind us to play through. He declined, then said, "Let's go Mountaineers." It turns out the he was from Michigan ( a State fan). But, he also enjoys watching the Mountaineers and feels that they are doing well. Later, we ended up sitting beside he and his wife a bar. We struck up a conversation and he went on and on about how much he loved visiting WV. He thinks it is a "beautiful" state. He has stayed at the Greenbrier and loved it. Even though, he is not from WV, he is very much a fan of our team and our state. ar
I continue to be amazed how many non-West Virginians speak so positively about our state and how many of them are Mountaineer fans.
Let's go Mountaineers!!! Bring on Ga. Southern!!
