Sun Devils Land Sanon

Last season was a disappointing one for Bobby Hurley and the Arizona State Sun Devils. They finished the 2023-24 season with an overall record of 14-18 and 8-12 in Pac-12 Conference play. That’s now three of the last four seasons that the Sun Devils have failed to reach the NCAA Tournament. Sun Devils now face even tougher challenges as they enter play in the best basketball conference in the country in the Big 12. But help is on the way for the 2024-25 season. Arizona State has an incredible recruiting class coming in and they managed to grab Joson Sanon away from rival Arizona.

Joson Sanon was originally committed to Arizona before flipping his commitment to Arizona State. A five-star recruit in the class of 2024, Sanon will provide the Sun Devils with additional depth at guard. He is considered to be one of the top shooting guards in the nation in his class.

Sanon’s decision to change his commitment came on the heels of Caleb Love announcing he would withdraw from the NBA Draft and return to Arizona. That likely meant Sanon would have a larger role with the Sun Devils than he would have had at Arizona. Both Arizona and Arizona State are set to join the Big 12 Conference for the 2024-25 season.

Sanon was originally part of the 2025 class but made the decision to reclassify to 2024 and be eligible to play college basketball this upcoming season. He had offers from UConn, Alabama, West Virginia, Boston College, Bryant, Georgetown, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Iowa, Marquette, Massachusetts, Miami, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Providence, Syracuse and UNLV.

Sanon isn’t the only top prospect in the class of 2024 that’s set to join Arizona State ahead of the 2024-25 season. The Sun Devils have four other commits in their freshman class highlighted by Jayden Quaintance.

Quaintance is considered one of the best power forwards in the country and was originally committed to Kentucky. He withdrew his commitment following John Calipari’s departure to Arkansas. Rather than follow Calipari to the Razorbacks, Quaintance surprised many by committing to Arizona State. He became the highest ranked recruit in Sun Devil history

Quaintance and Sanon will be joined by two four star recruits in Amier Ali and Sammie Yeanay and three star recruit Bo Aldridge. That gives the Sun Devils a top 3 recruiting class for the upcoming season.

Arizona State will also be bolstered by a good offseason haul in the transfer portal. The Sun Devils secured the commitments of five players in the transfer portal highlighted by former USC forward Brandon Gardner. He will be joined by former Wisconsin-Milwaukee forward BJ Freeman, former Missouri State guard Alston Mason, former Ball State big man Basheer Jihad and former Ole Miss guard Austin Nunez.

The Sun Devils lost six players to the transfer portal this offseason, most notably starting guard Frankie Collins. This upcoming season will be Bobby Hurley’s ninth season as Arizona State head coach. During that time, he’s complied a record of 155-131. He’s led the Sun Devils to three NCAA Tournament appearances but they’ve never advanced past the first round. But there will certainly be expectations heading into the 2024-25 season
