Huggins Announces First Recruit for 2017-18 Class
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (November 8, 2016) – West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins has announced that Brandon Knapper will attend WVU for the 2017-18 academic year and will play basketball for the Mountaineers.
“We are really excited about Brandon,” Huggins said. “Brandon loves the state of West Virginia and West Virginia University. Those are the kind of guys we want to have here. He was excited about going to prep school to make himself ready to play at this level. Because of that, we think he will be ready to come in and play major minutes with the loss of two senior guards.”
Knapper, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound guard from South Charleston, West Virginia, signed a national letter of intent in November 2015 to attend WVU and is currently enrolled at Hargrave Military Academy, playing for coach A.W. Hamilton.
“Brandon has been tremendous since arriving in August,” Hamilton said. “He’s extremely motivated in the classroom, weight room and on the court, and it’s showing with his production this season. I’m excited for Brandon, he’s going to flourish under coach Huggins.”
Hargrave is currently 5-0 and ranked No. 1 in the country. Through five games, Knapper is averaging 24.4 points, 5.1 assists and 2.1 steals per contest.
As a senior at South Charleston High where he played for coach Vic Herbert, he averaged 28.5 points, 6.0 assists and 5.4 steals per game and was named to the All-USA West Virginia Team by USA Today. Knapper was a three-time selection to the Class AAA All-State Basketball First Team and the Mountain State Athletic Conference All-League Team. He was a two-time MSAC Player of the Year.
As a junior, he averaged 23.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 3.8 steals per game. Entering his senior year, he had scored more than 1,000 points in two seasons at South Charleston.
As a sophomore, he averaged 18.8 points and 5.2 assists per game. He shot 52 percent from the floor and 86 percent from the foul line. Knapper scored 40 points in a win over Woodrow Wilson and scored 37 points in a victory over Spring Valley. He was the only non-senior on the Class AAA all-state basketball team. Knapper played AAU basketball for the West Virginia Wildcats.
The November signing period begins Wednesday and continues through next week.
