Transfers are key to Houston’s roster construction, but not the majority. So what’s the balance between building a roster for 2023 and planning for two or three years down the road?

“Everything we do is about next year,” Holgorsen said. “In my mind, you’re bringing 50 percent of your roster of high school kids every year … that’s signing for the future. There’s teams out there going 75-90 percent transfers because they know they’ve got to win or they’re f—ing done. That ain’t me, brother.”

UH lost just one starter via transfer: left guard Cam’Ron Johnson, who entered the portal this month as a graduate transfer.

“We didn’t lose (many) kids because our culture is good and kids still want to be here,” Holgorsen said.
