ESPNs Herbstreit who is largely responsible for their takes of the "deserving" in college football for years now, now thinks that 3 20 team conferences are in the works.

Yet another reason the BIG 12 must work overtime to be that third conference.

excerpt:

ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit thinks there could be room for one more premier league though when all is said and done. On First Take this morning, Herbstreit said he's leaning toward there being three leagues of consequence in the future....

"Whoever's left when the dust settles, they don't go into the SEC, they don't go into the Big Ten, I think there's a good chance we're going to end up with three power conferences right around 20 teams," Herbstreit told Keyshawn Johnson and Molly Qerim. "What I want to know is what will happen to the teams that are left out of those 55-60 teams in this new world that we're headed towards."

SEC and B1G will be the only 2 left standing and will split from NCAA. Open your eyes. The other 3 will survive but they will not be close to the P2 conferences.

If the BIG 12 is able to be that third conference (or the BASE of that conference regardless of what its called) then ACC teams are the most likely to be left behind when its said and done.

You have 69 teams right now in the "power" structure:

ACC-- 14
B10 -- 16
B12 -- 12
SEC -- 16
P 12 --10
Indy --ND

Between the ACC and PAC you have 24 schools to go into these conferences:

Big Ten needs 4 to get to 20
B12 needs 8 to get to 20
SEC needs 4 to get to 20

Total spots in the 3 20 team setup (with the BIG 12 as the base of the third): 16

24-16 = 8 schools LEFT OUT

So who is that going to be?

From the ACC--most likely not to make the 3 20 team power conferences:
BC, Syracuse, Wake, Duke

From the PAC--most likely not to make the 3 20 team power conferences:
Oregon State
Washington State

then who?
Cal?
Stanford?
Oregon?
Washington?

Who are the Big Ten and SEC likely to add?
Big Ten--Notre Dame

SEC? They want North Carolina and Virginia, but who knows if those two would go for the SEC over the more powerful and wealthier Big Ten. Clemson and FSU almost certainly to the SEC.

Its very possible the Big Ten would get North Carolina and Virginia, so that would leave ONE spot for the B10 which a guess would be Stanford to give USC and UCLA another close game and to give ND another yearly rival in conference to make them more comfortable.

So then the SEC would have:

Clemson
FSU

and probably still want to get into North Carolina and Virginia.

VT would be a lock in that case.

From North Carolina its either NC State or Duke. Duke may be more likely due to academic standing and brand even though its for basketball. Miami is also a strong possibility there with GT getting an outside shot due to being in ATL

So that leaves for 8 remaining spots in the reformed BIG 12 conference:

From ACC: BC, Wake, Syracuse, NC State, Louisville, GT, Pitt, Miami

From PAC: Washington, Wazzou, Oregon, Ore St, Cal, Utah, Colorado, AZ, ASU

The four corners schools may already be in the BIG 12 by that time,
then it becomes a choice of whose left?

Miami # 1 from the east even though their fanbase sucks
GT next because they are in ATL and have strong academics
Louisville has some rivalry with WVU and Cincinnati--probably a lock for #3

From the east then its likely down to Pitt or NC State.

From the West either Oregon or Washington.

Once you see some teams getting left out, say someone like Syracuse, that's when you'll see the AG of New York file a law suit against this new setup. Same will be true will the California schools. Governor Newsom is already crying over UCLA and USC leaving the PAC, and looking for a way to challenge it.

They don't have to add anyone, to leave the NCAA and form their own 32 team league.

Oregon has the best shot of any PAC team especially if connected to ND.

They have already stripped the Big 12. Unless Big 10 wants Kansas basketball.

First off VT, Louisville, NC State, BC, Syracuse, Pitt, or GT are going nowhere. Duke are you serious Clark.

UNC, UVA, FSU, Clemson, Stanford? Washington? Oregon?

Both will beg for ND. If no ND then they will stop at 4 more and 18 in a conference each. UNC, UVA, FSU and Clemson. Two to SEC and Two to Big 10.

ND is will not join a conference unless forced to. Separation from NCAA could do just that. But really they only need 32 teams. They are currently at 32.

That's why you'll see SEC and B1G leave the NCAA and tell them all screw you. He can cry all he wants. But since Liberals are destroying the country anything is possible.

Quite possible

I don’t think there is a legal way to stop schools from associating in conferences how they choose. The grant of rights is probably the best way to try. A state government isn’t made up of legislators from just one fanbase or school. It would be hard to get a consensus to say, leave Oregon out of major college athletics so Oregon State would have a major conference home - which legislators in Oregon have no control over.

Syracuse isn’t a state school anyway, they are a small private school much like BC, Duke, Wake and Miami. They would be on their own.

You will have 32-40 when it's all said and done.

Yup. There is no desire from the SEC or B1G to include any non legacy CFB brands. There MIGHT be hope for Oregon, UW, Stanford, and maybe Baylor if they end up dominating the new Big XII.

The only way in for outsiders would be if the powers that be decide to boot certain teams that have no interest in fielding a football team that will ever compete in the P2 for football only, which right now is unprecedented. In fact the only time I remember a conference kicking someone out is when the Big East booted Temple who was only a partial member.
