EXCERPT:
The possibility of a Big 12 invitation is just the latest chapter in UConn's tangled history in conference realignment. The school was left on the sideline during the first phase of significant realignment, as West Virginia joined the Big 12 before Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame left the Big East for the ACC.
In 2013, Rutgers joined the Big Ten and Louisville was tabbed by the ACC. Rutgers was said to deliver the New York market to the Big Ten, which also favored the New Jersey school because it is a member of the Association of American Universities.
Louisville was picked by the ACC over UConn based on its football program and southern geography. The Huskies were completing their second consecutive 5-7 football season when the ACC picked Louisville in November 2012.
A source told The Courant at the time that ACC basketball schools such as Duke and North Carolina supported UConn, but football schools such as Florida State and Clemson favored Louisville. And conference presidents feared losing the football schools if they were not appeased.
The ACC chose Louisville to fill a slot left by Maryland, which left for the Big Ten. The Big Ten has shown no indication it will again expand and the ACC, with 15 members, also seems set.
That leaves the Big 12 as UConn's best hope of joining a Power Five conference.
