Hammond Named Captain U Coach of the Year
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 31, 2015) - West Virginia University rifle coach Jon Hammond has been selected as the Rifle Winter 2015 CaptainU Coach of the Year.
Top coaches in each sport and division were chosen by CaptainU for their teams' inspiring and successful performances on and off the field.
"It's always nice to receive honors at the end of the year," said Hammond. "I think it's a true reflection of the hard work everyone put in this year. We have a great support staff that works with the team to make my job easier, and of course the great student athletes help, too. This is a nice way to finish a wonderful year."
In his ninth season with the Mountaineers, Hammond led WVU to its third straight and nation-best 17th NCAA title, at the 2015 NCAA Rifle Championships, March 13-14, in Fairbanks, Alaska. The title is the program's fourth under Hammond since 2009.
WVU finished second in smallbore at this year's championships with 2319, and closed a 12-point deficit to second-place Alaska-Fairbanks with its third straight NCAA air rifle title, shooting 2383, for a 4702 aggregate total. The air rifle score was the second-highest in NCAA and school history.
In addition to their NCAA titles, the Mountaineers secured their sixth straight Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships title with a 4709 team score, on March 1, in Oxford, Mississippi. The squad also won the conference's regular-season title, as the Mountaineers posted a perfect 8-0 record in conference matches this year.
