Gymnastics Finishes Season Ranked No. 28[/B]

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 14, 2015) [/B]- Following its second-best showing ever at an NCAA Regional Championships, the West Virginia University gymnastics team jumped eight spots and finished the 2015 season ranked No. 28 in the second-to-last GymInfo Poll.

The ranking is the Mountaineers' (14-9, 1-1-1) highest position since sitting at No. 21 at the end of the 2012 season.

"This final ranking says that the team really bought into my message before the regional championships, and that was that we had to maximize our ranking at the end of the year because it will impact our scores in 2016," said fourth-year coach Jason Butts. "We went from being a team that just missed qualifying for regionals in 2014, to a team that finished ranked in the top 30 nationally. This is a huge improvement for this program, and I think we finished the season the best we could."

Final season rankings are determined by a combination of a team's final regional qualifying score (RQS) and its NCAA Regional Championships score. The Mountaineers entered the NCAA Morgantown Regional Championships ranked No. 36 with a 195.355 RQS. The squad tallied 195.65 at the championships for a final national qualifying score (NQS) of 391.005.

Big 12 Conference foe Oklahoma enters this weekend's NCAA National Championships at No. 1 with a 395.52 NQS, while Iowa State finished the season ranked behind WVU at No. 29 (390.74 NQS).

The poll's top 12 spots will be adjusted following the national championships.

The Mountaineers placed fifth at the Morgantown regional with their third-best score of the season. The squad also placed a program-best second at the 2015 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship with a score of 195.025.
