Even in Nehlen's down years, I still had a good feeling about our program because I knew the program was mostly clean (as far as D1 programs can be). I knew Nehlen was a good family man, was a model father figure for the young men coming up through our program. He was very popular among national coaches - very much like a Bill Snyder. So, the fact that we lost to 3 of the 4 ranked teams we played each year, and sometimes would lose to a bad team here or there, I could live with it.
Same with Bill Stewart. 9 wins in Big East was like 7 wins in Big XII. But I could live with it because of who he was.
But with Dana, I don't think there's one guy in our program who would say he's a role model. I have had players tell me he's very good at yelling at them but not so good when it comes to motivation. They don't respect him as a person. As a coach, many do, but not aspire to be like him.
Like I said, if you're gonna be a mediocre coach, that's fine, just be a really good role model. If you're not much of a role model, you'd better be leading a program to at least 9 wins a year in the Big xii.
Dana is not doing either.
