We should have gone to a zone defense early in the SFA game. I said this during the game. The press was worthless.

We should have put Macon in the high post. Macon is out best passing big, by about 1000%

We should have shot more jumpers and crashed the boards for put backs.

Huggs made a bunch of mistakes. Still, I would not trade Huggs for one hundred Dana. Huggs is that much more of a head coach.

Good call... ...since Dana isn't a basketball coach.

I can only assume that you think we have a wrestling, baseball, or rifle team coach that could improve the basketball team....since you didn't mention them.

lol. you usually post something i can make sense of

I didn't reply again because I didn't want to be rude (but decided I would now because you're begging for my attention).

I'll leavee it at that.... ...for now.

The reason the press was worthless is because WE DIDN'T MAKE OUR SHOTS. When you don't make your shots, you can't press.

WVU pressed the whole game and it didn't work just like it didn't against UVA and UF. SFA turned the ball over a lousy seven times. The press wasn't working whether WVU made shots or not.

As far as not making shots SFA did an excellent job of covering the passing lanes and half court defense and WVU, either through being "unprepared" or attitude or whatever, didn't have an answer most of the night. Then in the second half they were actually passing up open mid range shots just to drive and were missing those.

There was no flexibility to WVU's mentality plus they just plain sucked last night. 22 turnovers to their 7. Unbelievable.

Right, shots had nothing to do with it. SFA obliterated the press.

I expect more flexibility next year. And the press will almost certainly be our backup defense. A la the 1-3-1 in 2010.

Our offense is dependent on the press. Only way we can shoot a decent percentage. You can't beat very many teams shooting 30%.

we were playing against a bunch of 6 4' forwards. all we had to do is throw it up and go get it off the rim. instead we ran the high post through devin. bad decision, no way around it.

i expect we will be much better next year, much more flexible.

The press didn't do enough or what it typically does to teams. Teams better than SFA with all due respect. I agree on this single example, but let's remember body of work of the press.

Walkup went 6-15...can live with that...but 19 FTs...can't win vs that.

That said, we could've won with Walkup going off & with limited turnovers produced. Our total collective defense was actually pretty good nonetheless. We did block 7 shots. SFA only made one more basket than WV did. Imagine that.

Our opponent missed 38 FGs, 16 3s and 10 FTs. Was out-rebounded by 15. Tell me that prior to tip-off and I say we win by about a dozen. Maybe more.

Turnovers (22) and offense inefficiency (16-52) is why we lost. Carter/Miles got 52 combined mins and produced 6 pts, 5 turnovers. I do agree a better plan to get better shots can be done. At some point, you can't just say we didn't make any shots. Put the players in position to get better shots.

Team scored 1 bucket in a 15-minute stretch that killed the game. That's when it slipped away & our guys gave up when they couldn't score. Remember, halves are only 20 mins. That's approaching nearly one half the game without scoring.

huggins didnt trust his point guards. probably for good reason. but without a point/forward type to run the high post through, he had no where to go. as i said, i would have jacked up 20 footers and crashed the boards - would have been much more efficient

we were not getting past unc anyway. not like we could of made the final four. get better. come back stronger

Someone write this down and save it for next year!

Heck............WV was jacking up 2 footers...............and couldn't hit those! 20 footers? Is you crazy? Clang Clang..............Maxwell Silver Hammer.

The press effectiveness is accumulative so you stay with it. Game after game teams did better against it in the first half but got so exhausted in the 2nd half that the turnovers accelerated rapidly, shooting OP's theory.
The real problems:
WVU could shoot the ball in the ocean if the Mountaineers were standing on the dock.
The Mountaineers couldn't pass, even when NOT guarded. I counted 4 such misplays without pressure on 4 consecutive possession.
That is what cost WVU the game, not Press Virginia never kicking up a notch as usual as the game progressed.

You have to "dance with the one who brought you." Huggins is not above criticism, but his press has turned an average-skilled squad into a 26-game winner.
