It seems like we've had a number of injuries with little if any dropoff. I've been watching since the mid 60s and I can't remember better depth.

1988 was the first thing that popped into my mind also when I read this thread. A whole lot of talent on that team!1988 was 2 deep at just about every position...and then some.
Overall............the answer is "yes"It seems like we've had a number of injuries with little if any dropoff. I've been watching since the mid 60s and I can't remember better depth.
This thread isn't about the best team. No doubt '88 wins that hands down. I do recall Whitmore going down in the Syracuse finale, I believe, and depth was a real concern. When Major was injured very early in the Fiesta Bowl the drop-off when Greg Jones took over was huge. No doubt QB depth on the current team is problematic.No...not even close

I still think '88 team had more depth. If I recall correctly, Coach Nehlen replaced the entire OL on the 3rd series each game with little drop off in talent (which certainly helped in '89.) Greg Jones played well at times during the season, but it definetely hurt when Major went out in Fiesta Bowl, but IMO Jones was superior to this year's backups, or at least had more experience. I think Whitmore got hurt in the last away game (Rutgers?) the week before the SU home finale, but I could be wrong about that. That injury hurt, but there was some discussion after the bowl game that maybe Coach Nehlen should have just replaced him with the best player available instead of reshuffling the whole defensive backfield before the game with ND.This thread isn't about the best team. Chugs showed a little bit of a live arm on Saturday.Maybe at every position except QB. If Skyler gets hurt we're in trouble.

Its nice to think the 1988 team was the greatest and the most depth. Its just not true. They would lose 3-4 games with our schedule now.I still think '88 team had more depth. We have decent depth right now, but I agree that 1988 was the deepest team WVU has ever had, to include QB.1988 was 2 deep at just about every position...and then some.

He didn't make a good showing before the pros.Major carried that ball like it was a loaf of bread! Wouldn't it have been something to have him back for his senior year? The pro teams had it all wrong. Major Harris would have been a great professional player but the 'shiny shoes' at the time were looking for the drop back passing type QB. What a shame.
