sorry, not going to happen. it's not your father's europe, at least not as far as bball. if someone, close to this kid, doesn't get in his ear and set him straight before he makes a colossal mistake... this is going to be a minor tragedy.

if devin is about to finish his degree THIS year... i take all this back

I know kids from High School that played D3 ball that are over there playing. He will find a job over there playing if he chooses, most of our players will as well.

That said, there is a difference between making 30k a year playing in front of a high school sized crowd, and making 500k+ and playing in front of similar sized crowds he plays in front of now, I agree he may not be the latter.

But no clue where this rumor is surfacing from, first I've heard of it.

Where you hearing these "rumors" of him leaving early? I haven't read/heard anything.

Devin is leaving at the end of the year to go play for one of the multiple offers in Europe that he already has on the table.

His power, stature, and ability to rebound are things that several Euro programs have been very interested in since he arrived to WVU.

Absolutely!! His game is not at the level for him to have sustained success as a pro. In fact I am very disappointed in what I have seen of him against tougher competition. He is not refined. He is really not agile. He persists in dribbling to set up his timing , and that cannot be don when 5 defenders are close by. This is the cause of his many turnovers and lack of shots during the game.

Is this a new trend? Leaving college early to go play in Europe? I understand the NBA, but why leave college early for one year in Turkey or something. I get the money thing, but it will be there the next year too.

Will it? The chance of injury disagrees..... Every single game in an athlete's career is a gift that could be taken away in a heart beat

Devin, and more importantly his mother who he wishes to take care of, have a very realistic outlook towards his pro career.... They know the limitations are from things anther year in college won't change.

i wish him the best but a degree is his best shot.. european leagues are officiated much like the b12. and the players are much taller and more athletic than they were 10 years ago.

He can finish his degree anytime he wishes. His window to make money by playing basketball is a short one. I support any player who makes the decision to capitalize on their skill.

Hopefully he finishes this year strong.

Is it coincidental that his play has went down the past several games, and this pro talk at about the same time? We can be a really good team, but we COULD be a GREAT team if we get the Devin that we had at the beginning of the season. With the field in CBB being level this year, if Devin becomes dominate again WVU has a legitimate chance at......yes.....I'm going to say it......a national title. There are no dominate teams out there.

The rumors existed last year, I believe.

I heard the same thing, although I'm sure your sources are more legitimate than mine. Mine was more of the somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody variety.

With the way they are calling NCAA games and ticky tack fouls, I don't blame him. He's only getting about 20 minutes a game due to foul trouble.

He has the chance to sign for an entry level contract that would bring him 60k+..... Roughly 3 times the entry level salary for someone in his field of study if he were to choose to wait, graduate, and join the work force

entry level pro ball pay in europe can be as low as 25k, which is a lot closer to what devin will make. a degree last a lifetime. freedom of movement is even more important in fiba/europe then the ncaa. devin will not be allowed to push people around.

kid needs his degree. and lets be honest...leaving college early to take financial care of your parents is sad, screwed up, and sorrowful

someone needs to help this kid.

Devin has an offer of more than 60k right now

Some of us just don't make numbers up just to feel informed.

He is in a great position to take care of his mother, and with a level of income that was never obtainable where he and his family come from

To insult a Mountaineer so poorly for desiring to tend to his family shows a great sense of human-failure on WVPaper's behalf....

How many financial opportunities have your 7 DUIs cost your family, Otis?

lol. pretty sure everyone knows this is your modus operandi.

OK, 60K sounds great, but what will it be when you factor in cost of living overseas, trips to and from home here, and all that? I mean I'm in my retirement job right now, making around 60K per year, living modestly, and it's still difficult.

But I can't blame, and will never blame, anyone who has a chance to earn money. If put in that situation, I'd probably go too.

60k is number keaton just made up.

but, just for argument, let's say it's right. devin could not live in europe and help his family on 60k

Depends on location.

You don't know the families situation (neither do I), but for people in difficult straits 60K is a blesssing.

He won't be living in Saint Germain des Pres, but there are options. I survived in Europe with less.

So professional European teams are offering amateur college athletes contracts directly without agents representing them, during the season, with actual monetary figures involved? How exactly does that happen? How does the NCAA feel about that? How would they even have access to players who don't have agents?

Are European scouts being sent to Morgantown to watch him play and offer him suitcases of cash?

sounds like another lie, doesn't it... lol

Cost of living doesn't come into play

He will get free food, free clothes, a place to live and sometimes even a car from the signing team.... Will he live in a mansion? No. It will be a nice 1-bedroom apartment. But the pay is pretty much tax free and the benefits and perks are great....

I mean Deniz Kilicli signed his rookie deal for nearly 6-figures in Turkey.... Flowers and DaSean make that too. Probably Ruoff as well....

The difference in International play is you get taken care of off th court very well, and it makes up for the smaller contracts

Devin will sign a rookie deal with a relatively modest salary, and he will (hopefully) play his way into the bigger deal in year 2..... Europe doesn't do long term deals usually so it is an annual evaluation... But year 2 is when the American guys get paid after they prove their worth and their reliability...

Huggins was able to get Dom Rutledge a great pro gig in the Mediterranean.... He will have no trouble helping Devin land a great deal

Devin is majoring in "multi-disciplinary studies"

There are 2 options for him.... Play pro ball or grad school to ACTUALLY get a degree that will lead to a career

you have no idea what you're saying. a 4 year degree is a 4 year degree. with a degree, devin will be able to get in the door somewhere. life is very, very hard for black men that don't have a degree.

As stated, a 60k paycheck for basketball is 3-times the average "foot in the door" MDS-degree job

He is either going to play basketball or coach basketball.... A degree is not as important right now as pro experience

It isn't a debate anyways. The decision has been made for a year

So what you are saying is that Huggins is using his contacts with European teams then? You have already said that Devin was offered 60k... So in effect you are saying that Huggins is acting as Devin's agent and putting him in contact with professional European teams, who have in turn offered him a 60k contract...

You might want to watch what you say because from your constant need to feel like an insider by riding Gman's coattails, you could greatly effect Devin's amateurism status with comments like you have made in this thread... not only that but put Huggins in a tough spot with the NCAA if he is honestly brokering deals with European teams for current amateur athletes on his own team.

Just saying...

The way Devin has been playing the past 3 games. He needs to find a seat on the bench until he wants to play. I feel he is frustrated with the new rules and they point him out for physical play and he gets whistled for fouls.

Paper...............I agree with you. Williams needs that degree since it is his to keep once earned. and the degree pays dividends forever! But, if Williams goes to Europe.............he will survive. I wish him the best.

I watch all the games... ...and I don't see the lack of effort or desire.

Maybe that should be more concerning.

So basically he is already gone no matter what which means WVU is going to get these half ass performances the rest of the season.

Depends on how you define 'half ass'... ...is it based on effort or skill ?
