According to coach Dana Holgorsen, West Virginia's best days in the Big 12 are still ahead.

We should be even better next year,” Holgorsen told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Jack Magruder.

“We've got everybody coming back on offense.”

Skyler Howard threw for a career-high 532 yards and tossed the game-winning touchdown in the final two minutes. Receivers Shelton Gibson, Daikiel Shorts and Ka'Raun White made plays all night. And running back Wendell Smallwood averaged 5.5 yards per carry.

“It's about time it fell together,” Howard told Magruder. "Our goal throughout the season was to get better each week on offense, keep improving each week. It finally started clicking. I think we had a complete game on offense."

The key for West Virginia next year will be whether Howard and the rest of the offense can build off the Cactus Bowl performance and consistently deliver complete performances. Coming in, the Mountaineers had been sluggish at times on offense, due in large part to an inconsistent passing attack.

The defense will have some key faces to replace, notably linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski. But on the other side of the ball, virtually everyone is back, including true freshman receiver Jovon Durante, who didn't even play in the Cactus Bowl.

If Howard plays the way he did in the desert, West Virginia could get back to being a load on offense in 2016.

Here's who we lose on defense (starters or played significant time):
1) Barber
2) Bruce
3) Chestnut
4) KJ Dillon
5) Karl Joseph
6) Eric Kinsey
7) Kwiatkoski
8) Petteway
9) Kyle Rose
10) Worley

Here's who we lose on offense:
1) Clay
2) KJ Myers
3) Jordan Thompson
4) Stone Underwood
5) Smallwood (I'm guessing he declares)
6) Shell (I'm guessing he declares)

We have a bunch of talented WRs. But you can't lose 10 guys on defense and expect to have a decent defense.

And no offense to anyone but I'll wager any amount of money you want that we don't win 10 games next year.

If you truly believe that this team will win 10 games next year with all the losses on defense then you should go to Vegas now and place a bet on it. You would get some serious action on that one with the Vegas wise guys

If allot of people are willing to take you up on that one then you will be a millionaire this time next year

I would hope we are better next year. That's kind of how programs grow....they get better year after year.

i'm convinced dana still doesn't think about the defense. “We should be even better next year" means the offense should be better. team with the ball last wins

Don't other schools lose players too? Is there a way to keep them for like 7 or 8 years? Maybe this is why some posters get mad at Holgorsen because he gets rid of them after only 4 or 5 years putting us at a disadvantage.

What else is he going to say? We're losing a bunch of guys and will probably suck?

"Programs" with "tradition" and "expectations" replace seniors with ready to play sophomores and juniors who will be as good. "Teams" with low expectations "rebuild" for 2-4 years until they can "compete" with others and use the claim of "graduation" for their defense.

But, hey, we are West Virginia. From what I've read from a couple of guys, we should lower these expectations and expect no better than 7 regular season wins now that we are in the Big 12. So....maybe that solves that.....

Did you ever think that WVU could win 8 games this year with all the losses on offense from the previous year? Don't bother answering it, I likely won't read your response anyway.

OP...and do you believe that DH would say something like "I believe we are going to really suck next year?" What was the purpose of this post?

Well I thought we would have beaten Kstate and Okie state and that would have meant 9 wins. Don't worry i know you'll read this

I think we will be better next year, but that doesn't mean we'll win more games.

Wins and Losses should be all that matters. 4 of the 5 teams that Wvu lost to all have to come to Morgantown. Tcu and Baylor lose players that where important to their team K State should be a winnable game every year with the Talent level they have. Okie State has been peaking on the odd number years. 9 of the 12 games will be difficult but you have to protect the house. If you can't win more than 7 wins with the way the schedule plays out then Im not sure when you think it will happen. Your not gonna get a situation where you have a fifth year senior on the two deep at every postion

WVU's athletic director-who probably knows a bit more about successful college football programs than the LIFs of the board:

from an article just prior to last season:

Lyons argues that it isn’t as bad as it seems, although WVU has really had problems in football since moving to the Big 12.

“We have been competitive. It’s just we haven’t won a few of those games that could have turned a season around,”
.....

“I’m very optimistic with what this team can do and this coaching staff can do to turn this around and get us above the .500 mark and be competitive nationally.”

Certainly it will be important to turn things around.

“I think any program you want to be better than 7-6. I know there are certain years that’s more acceptable,” Lyons said. “You have to do it year to year. You have to look at the bigger picture, who is returning, what are your injuries, what happened that year.
.....

“Yes, it boils down to wins and losses, but it boils down to more than that. It boils down to what the team is doing academically, what it is doing from a character standpoint outside the classroom and playing field. Are they staying out of trouble?

There’s a whole wide range of things I look at other than wins and losses. Are they improving from year to year? If I see the team going backwards, that’s an issue any athletic director has to look at. You have to evaluate it each and every year. Is the team making improvements?”

WV fans really have no need to ever lower their expectations with regard to wins. However, reality must be accepted. All teams and their fans have high expectations. Lyons stated that he would be happy if the team stays above .500. Go and read his statement that Buckaineer posted.

IN LEAGUE....above .500. That was his statement. But, if we go 5-4 in the league but go 0-3 in the non-conference part of the schedule, or 1-2.....well.....

Dana thought enough of the defense to bring Bradley in to tutor Gibby last year. Dana also said after the Cactus bowl win that you can't win bowl games unless your offense, defense and special teams all play well. I no doubt believe Dana values good defense. Also, if you look at the commitment list 11 of the 22 commits are defensive players with 10 for offense and one kicker.

Did Dana say IN LEAGUE..............heck, I better go read his statement again. OK, I read it again and he said five hundred. I bet he meant IN LEAGUE. Yes.............he did mean IN LEAGUE.

I'm not sure what some of the posters on here want? We have a decent team with the recruiting limitations we have. I for one do not want to change coaches and start over, because more than likely we could be in a worse position than we are now. Unless we would get a big name like Saban, Miles.....someone like that the recruiting is not going to improve anymore than it has.......that is reality

This is what makes our idiot board special. We have low information fans who have never thrown a football or dribbled a basketball, never coached not even a little league team, never have seen the inside of WVU classroom, and have trouble finding their seats at the stadium even though they have been sitting in the same ones for 10 years, attempt to define what a successful college athletic program should be.

The lowest of the lows demanding the highest of the highs from others. Pure gold.

We demand perfection or else!

Well Mr High information Im sure your one of those people who have never thrown a football or dribbled a basketball But since you have a propensity for posting pictures. Why don't you post a picture of your PHD on this subject so we can verify your status as a high information poster

You are wasting your breath. This guy was the one that posted about the basketball team and said how hard they play on the "field"......:joy:.......and he tells others that they have never dribbled a basketball or thrown a football?

Not to mention the pictures he continues posting are derogatory towards the stereotypes of WVians throughout the nation.....and his name is "West By God Virginia".......which is something that these same people he posts pictures of would say......[roll]....He is full of hypocrisy.

The only thing that these pictures are derogatory towards is low information fans and that goes beyond the borders of WV - sometimes all the way to Colorado. And as for you, it isn't that much of a stretch based on your postings to picture you standing next to a car on blocks in a form fitted shirt demanding that our football program win 10 or 11 games a year, and even giving advice on how that can be accomplished. If the "shirt" fits, wear it.

redneck_mentor.jpg

As you can imagine, we have very high expectations.

Posting pictures does not make you elite....or a "high information fan"......[thumbsup]

And I would bet you don't even live in the great state of West Virginia.....so......be gone! ;)

You forgot, those fans that would like for a 8-9 win season year in, year out.....are......not......fans........;)

Sounds pretty medicore to me. I want 10-11 win seasons, year in, year out and a national championship every three years.

If Dana can't make that happen, fire him and hire someone who can - because I'm a man of standards and won't settle.

Obviously I'm just a bigger fan than you - because I want bigger results. Don't try to out fan me because I won't hesitate to drop a demand for undefeated seasons every year and 10 straight national titles....my demands have no limits!

So, you think the following is too high of expectations for WVU football.....

1. Win our OOC games (3-0)
2. Go 5-4 in conference
3. Win a bowl game

Total: 9-4

Yeah, We should have the following expectations instead:
1. Win 1-2 of our OOC (1-2; 2-1)
2. Go 3-6 or 4-5 in conference
3. Be competitive in a bowl game

Total 4-8....or 5-7........or 6-6.....and just outright giggly for 7-6!
