Cooke to Join Men's Golf[/B]
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. ([/B][/I]April 20, 2015) - West Virginia University golf coach Sean Covich announced Monday that West Virginia native and former Parkersburg High standout Alan Cooke will join the Mountaineers for their first varsity season in more than 30 years this fall, transferring from the University of South Carolina at Beaufort.[/I]
"We're excited to welcome yet another West Virginia native to our roster," said Covich. "Much like Chris Williams, Alan will bring a lot of collegiate golf experience to our new program. He has continued to get better every year after graduating from Parkersburg High. I look forward to Alan becoming a leader for WVU golf over the next few years."[/I]
Hailing from Vienna, West Virginia, Cooke was named to the West Virginia All-State Team (AAA) in both 2011 and 2012 while competing for the Big Reds. He was a member of the International Junior Golf Tour All-Tournament team in 2012 and 2013, and recorded a top-15 finish at the 2014 West Virginia State Open, taking 14th place overall and fifth among amateurs. Cooke finished sixth at the 2013 West Virginia State Amateur held at The Greenbrier, shooting 71-67-74-78, and carded a 73 at the US Open Local Qualifier in Wallace, North Carolina, last summer.
Cooke spent two seasons playing for the Sand Sharks of USC Beaufort, leading the squad with a 73.28 stroke average in tournament play. He finished under par in 17 rounds and carded eight rounds in the 60s, including a 66 in the final round of the NAIA National Preview. Cooke has claimed nine top-10 finishes, including a trio of individual tournament titles. As a freshman, he was named to the NAIA Ping All-Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America.[/I]
