COLLEGE ATHLETICS CONSTRUCTION ROUNDUP: AUGUST 2015

The “College Athletics Construction Roundup” is a monthly series on the construction of intercollegiate athletics facilities. Each month we’ll provide a list of announced, in progress and recently completed athletic construction projects from around the country. Master Plan
Eastern Kentucky unveiled its strategic campus plan. Among the athletic items include a $27 million addition to Roy Kidd Stadium, a new wellness center / indoor practice facility and enhancements to the baseball and softball stadiums.
Wake Forest is in the middle of an athletic facility plan. The $21 million indoor practice facility for football and $4.5 million facility for the golf programs will open this fall. The school is looking to begin construction on a $10 million project for the baseball team which includes a clubhouse, locker room and coaches’ offices. The school is also exploring premium seating additions to Joel Coliseum.
Virginia is eyeing upgrades to facilities across several sports. Highlights include a new $12 million outdoor tennis facility, a $50 million football support building (to include locker rooms, coaches’ offices, auditorium and academic support space) and $12 million in improvements to baseball’s Davenport Field (to include added premium seating, additional indoor batting cages and the replacement of wooden bleachers with chair-back seating.
Henderson State is upgrading several athletic facilities. Baseball and softball facilities will receive synthetic surfaces and new lighting. Carpenter-Haygood Stadium had new ticket booths and wrought-iron fencing installed. The tennis courts have been repaired and repainted and there are plans to improve the locker rooms in Wells Natatorium.

Football
Villanova began construction on a new $18 million West End Zone building. The new facility will include athletic training and strength training centers, a football locker room, coaches’ offices, meeting room and academic support areas.
Colorado State released renderings of a planned party patio at its new stadium, slated to open for the 2017 season. The stadium capacity will be 41,000 with 36,000 seats; many of those without assigned seats are expected to watch the game from the north end zone open areas.
Florida State has begun construction of the Champions Club, a club level seating addition to Doak Campbell Stadium. The project will include 6,000 chair-style seats in the south end zone, 40,000 square-feet of air-conditioned club space and expanding the terrace area with bars and a permanent cover.
New Hampshire has begun construction on $25 million in upgradesto Cowell Stadium, as part of the larger campus construction plan. The project will upgrade current seating and add 5,700 new seats. Game lights, restrooms and concessions will all be addressed as well.
Iowa has proposed spending up to $45 million to renovate Kinnick Stadium. Renovations would include premium seating options, renovated restrooms and updated vending options. The project is part of a larger facilities spending plan.

Basketball
Cincinnati is expected to approve up to $85 million to renovateFifth Third Arena. Work will begin immediately after the 2015 – 2016 season. The plan will replace the rollaway bleachers with permanent seating. Upgrades to concessions, lighting and the HVAC systems are also planned along with a new roof.
Millersville is replacing the court in Pucillo Gymnasium. Locker rooms for several programs also received facelifts as part of the project including new lockers, upgraded ceiling and wall tiles and a Durex floor coating.
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County will spend $67 million on a new event center to be located on campus. The 170,000 square foot facility will host the school’s varsity programs, as well as various community events.
Rider has broken ground on a new 8,400 square-foot basketball practice facility. The project is the second phase in a multi-phased enhancement project to Alumni Gymnasium.

Olympic / Other Sports
Northwestern College unveiled the new Ron and Peg Juffer Fieldhouse. The $3.2 million facility will provide dedicated practice space for the golf, baseball and softball programs. The fieldhouse will also contain a new strength and conditioning area.
TCU will spend $7.5 million for new renovations of Lupton Baseball Stadium. The facility will include a new locker room, classroom, lounge area, coaches’ offices and sports medicine center. Construction is expected to be complete in time for the 2016 season.
Michigan is planning a new $15 million U-M Golf Course clubhouse. The design is for a new 23,000 square-foot facility. Also in the budget are improvements to holes 1 and 10 and relocated parking. Construction is expected to begin this fall and last a year.
Seton Hall is working with Essex County on softball and tennis facility enhancements. The softball field will receive new infield and outfield synthetic turf, a press box to accommodate game ops, TV and radio, and batting cages located within in bullpen areas. The tennis courts will be completely rebuilt with a new playing surface, fencing, nets and lighting.
High Point University has installed new turf on Vert Stadium, the home of the school’s soccer and lacrosse programs. The school installed Mondoturf Classic MF 3550 synthetic turf.
Kentucky Wesleyan College is collaborating with Owensboro Public Schools to build a new track and field facility. The $1 million facility will have a steeplechase pit, runway for long and triple jumps, a javelin area, pole vault runway and throwing event pads.
Michigan State will install electric heating systems at McLane Baseball Stadium and Secchia Stadium. Heating ribbons will be installed 3 – 9 inches beneath the surface and have the ability to be controlled remotely.
Temple broke ground on the boathouse renovation. The project will provide new locker rooms, update public restrooms and renovate office space.

Academic & Multi-Use Facilities
Western Washington will spend $70 million to renovate the Carver Academic Facility. The project will include computer labs, instructional space, offices and gymnasiums for athletics and the campus community.
Southern Miss announced they will build the Bower Academic Excellence Center. The facility will be located under the west side stands of Roberts Stadium. It will include classrooms, computer labs, group study rooms and private tutoring areas.

Other Notes of Interest
Auburn will spend $25 million to build a new sports medicine facilityon campus. The school will partner with the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), Dr. James Andrews and the Hughston Clinic on the project. Once complete, the facility is planned for use by Auburn student-athletes, the at-large student population and the community.
Lexington Center Corp. will spend $15 million to upgrade Rupp Arena. Upgrades include a new center-hung scoreboard, wireless internet for fans and updates to the roof infrastructure to allow for heavier lights and equipment needed for major concerts and large events.
