Just reading various articles, podcast and interviews and the talk about WVU’s success under the circumstances is mind blowing. Despite lack of national TV hookups and exposure.
Also watching opposing coaches Gonzaga, Kansas and Iowa State observing the game you could see them watching WVU come out and overachieve. I am sure they are thinking “no way who is this guy…..who are these players”.
If you want to hear it explained watch 3Guys “Blowed Up Cyclones Ep 609”. At the 30 to 38 minute timeline….its one of the best segments I have ever heard on that podcast. Listen if you get a chance. Writers on this board are fantastic as well.
If you think at some point teams will figure out Coach DeVries and the players will just eventually be who most expected, newbies pulled together getting lucky. I would not bet on it.
What I would do if I am a apposing B12 team/coach is beat WVU now because it will not get easier. DeVries and his assistants are going to recruit players that fit into a culture he has defined already, which is amazing in itself.
Play hard on every play, defend at an elite level, buy into the culture and find ways to beat teams differently on a weekly basis. This guy can coach, if we can keep DeVries he may lead the first major sport at WVU to win a national championship.
