City attempting to put an end to couch burning

If that's what it takes, maybe it's appropriate......at least in the hours immediately after football games

I thought they had done that already.

I had a friend who had a couch and a lazy boy on his porch and used lawn chairs in his living room! lol

No more upholstered furniture outside or get fined. If they really want this to make a dent they should have skipped the warning and made it a $500 fine right off the bat rather than up to $500. I know I couldn't afford that in college. My drinking habit and books cost too much.
........glad to see you've got your priorities right, 1st - BEER, 2nd - Books.

Its never appropriate to jeopardize the rights of law abiding citizens because less than 1% of a crowd of 60,000 wants to light their couch on fire in the aftermath of a football game. Its not good for our gameday atmosphere which brings in a ton of tourism dollars for the town, state, and University, and its not good for our students.

You want to stop it? Start putting UCs on foot around all of the hot spot streets after games and when people decide to start bringing a couch out to the middle of the road bust them on sight in front of everyone. With the penalty for couch burning being a felony + expulsion from WVU the word will spread very quickly to stop.

All I am saying is you do not want to give the police the green light to bust anyone they believe is suspicious. This is America not nazi Germany, do not empower the police to bust people for crimes not yet committed which is what will inevitably start happening.

There's an ocean between a well policed and safe environment and what your describing. You're being ridiculous.

We already have a well policed safe environment, I went to games for 4 years and never saw anything dangerous that would require a riot squad, what you are suggesting is having armored police around a sporting event, that my friend is ridiculous.

I live near an outdoor concert hall in NJ, about 8 years ago some teenagers got severly drunk at a tailgate and the story made all of the local headlines. The township responded by banning tailgating for concerts and it is strictly enforced. Attendance has been down big time since they turned over power to the police force. I fear something similar for WVU because morons like to light up their furniture once or twice a year despite the fact that they are basically putting their future in the balance by doing so.

I dont understand why you think swat teams and armored police are the solution when my solution of sticking undercover cops on streets like Grant Street after games with the sole purpose of waiting for someone to pull out a couch will stop the problem without changing the gameday experience for the other 99.9% of fans who dont light fires.

I think you guys are underestimating the mob mentality. This isn't one or five kids pulling a couch out of a house and lighting it - there's 3-5 thousand kids in one confined area and you would have a very hard time stopping it without an extreme show of force like a couple hundred riot gear cops.

1) If Grant street was well policed and safe, we wouldn't be having fires after every significant victory or occasion, so either you're being disingenuous or you're ignorant to the problems in that area.

2) I obviously made the mistake of assuming you actually read anything I wrote and clearly you did not, because anyone who did would know I never made any suggestions whatsoever, and the words armored police, or SWAT Teams were never written by myself. You're setting up straw man argument of thuggish police behavior. All police carry guns and other protective equipment and yes, I assume if they are working around a mob of people, they'll be appropriately attired.

3) 99.9% of the people don't go to Grant Street after that games. How would the GAME ATMOSPHERE suffer from having a police presence on GRANT STREET.

4) Having you seen the video's of these riots? You think a single non-uniformed, undercover cop is going to control a drunken mob of 1,000?

We aren't talking about college kids just being really drunk and having big parties. They are destroying private property and creating a very dangerous environment.

So please, answer me how the GAMEDAY ATMOSPHERE will be negatively impacted if police officers are positioned on GRANT STREET.

What are people like WVU2010 so scared of? Don't act like an idiot and you won't have problems with the police, even if there's a heavy presence.

I go to all kinds of events and enjoy myself, have drinks and socialize with my friends with plenty of police around - never had a single problem. I like having law enforcement nearby, keeps the trouble makers (like WVU2010) out.

Typical idiot-assed response from a bunch of 'Town Council Wannabes'.

Hell, the way this bunch thinks, if there were a bank robbery or two in Morgantown they would vote to 'Close All The Banks'.
