I don't understand Georgia at all. Richt had a better overall record there than Dooley, a far better bowl record than Dooley, and an equal number of top 10 finishes in a decade less time on the job.

In 25 seasons, Dooley won 3 outright SEC titles. They finished as co-champions in 3 other seasons, beating the other co-champ head to head in 1 of those 3 years.

Richt reached the SEC title game 5 times in 15 seasons, going 2-3 in those. On 1 other occasion, he tied for the SEC East but lost the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Tough to compare the SEC achievements because of the different formats in place, but the frequency of being near the conference title is reasonably similar. Really the only separator is the one national championship Dooley captured.

If Dooley is their gold standard at Georgia, then calling Richt an underachiever looks ludicrous to me. If Richt is a disappointment, please sign me up for a 15-year tenure just like his.

The problem with Richt is that he never recruited another Herschel Walker to Georgia. If he had only had a spotlight grabbing player like Walker at some point I suspect he would still be the coach.

Somebody needs to generate an office pool "Name the New Coaches" bracket kind of thing. Fill in your predictions for the new head coaches; toss in $10 and the winner gets all the money.

The argument down here is the recruiting area is far more robust than it was back then (debatable I know). Also it seems as if the guy they want (most think it's Smart) is going to take one of the open jobs so they don't want to wait. Crazy as they currently have the number 1 QB in the nation.

Also there is a lot of resentment that the Dawgs having taken advantage of a down Florida the last few years and Missouri coming in from the big 12 and winning back to back SEC east titles didn't help either.

Crazy time right now. If he faltered down the stretch I could see it happening but he wan his last few games and beat their rival (albeit in a down year for Tech)

The above (UGA hasn't won an NC since 1980 and it sticks in their craw, especially during the SEC run of multiple NCs a few years back, Dawg Nation is SURE they should have won one or two) and the fact that in 15 seasons Richt was 5-10 against Florida. UGA gave up the SEC East title to Missouri two years in a row, and it was their own doing.

Richt also has the reputation of having done LESS with MORE than any coach in the country. Multiple years of highly ranked recruiting classes, multiple years of NFL top draft picks and NOTHING ( in the eyes of the Dawg Nation) to show for it.

Most fickle fan base in the country, even above ours.

Richt recruited good to great RBs . The problem is they tore up their knees (Gurly, Chubb).

Did UGA underachieve? Yes, and after 15 years, if it hasn't happenned it probably won't there given where the program was when he got there. And at $4 million annually to Richt with that recruiting base, he shouldn't not have been shut out of an appearance in the title game. Heck Donald EUGENE Nehlen played for 2 or a share of 2 NC in his 1st 14 seasons. Mark Richt never played for 1 and only had 2 SEC titles in 5 trips to ATL in 15 years.

Time to cut ties on both sides and move on. Have no sympathy for a guy getting $4 million annually to coach a kids game if he loses his job.

He will be ok I'm sure.

Richt has been an underachiever considering the recruiting and resources available. He will make a great coach at another school I expect him to end up at Miami.

Me too. Listened to the presser this morning. Guy is a class act. He will not be out of a job long unless he wants to take a break.

Kirby Smart possible replacement is already causing a stir in the Dawg Nation. About 50/50 it seems. Most want a proven HC over a career asst.
if Smart didn't have an NFL player at every position, he'd be just another coach running a 3-4..that team has Da'Shawn Hand, the #1 recruit in the nation in 2013 and he's still riding the bench..he would have started at DE from day one for over 100 other schools including WVU.
