I firmly believe we can. We're almost there now. However until or unless we start consistently landing the "name" recruits (ie: 4 and 5 star guys on everyone's "blue chip" list) and winning with them; we really won't be considered a serious threat by the pundit types.
For better or worse they go on perceptions, and the general consensus on us still is "solid program, but lacking big time players". We need some W's this season to turn that perception around and start winning some of the battles for the marquee types.
Perceptions drive reality. We will be competitive, but in order to change perceptions nationally from "potential" to "player" for national honors, we need a serious bump in our recruiting. Not so much the types of players, but in the names and the recognition landing a few more of them would bring to the program.
