Buddy Hield said that WVU was toughest team they played all year

Tough...absolutely. Good trait. Would have been better if they "shot" better instead of heaving it up however. BTW: When will WVU get a real shooter? Seems like every time a new recruit is announced the forum world goes crazy with how great the recruit will be...including point production and then we see another member of the bricklayers union on the court.

No surprise. WVU was as tough as they come over 30+ games vs top opponents, despite the finale.

Hield was escorted to Miles Island for 6 pts after scoring 39 on I-State, a Sweet 16 club. There are few and far between college players who repeatedly go for 30+. Hield did that 12 times and counting. It's only a 40-minute game.

Let's not forget the body of work for WV. Not many equaled it.

If The Mountaineers ever get a couple players that can regularly make shots and play suffocating defense, The Team could win a Big XII conference title.
Very tough to recruit offensive talent to a program where rebounding and defense is everything.

Fanboys all over this statement. Sad that they didn't take the NCAA Tournament 'serious'...

You're right, 'cause we know that there's never any early upsets in the NCAA tourney and Huggs has never had past success in the NCAA tourney as well......must just be "fanboys" defending Huggs at all costs.....[thumbsup]

Why can't some people just realize, and ACCEPT, that we got outplayed. Regardless of coaching, or playing, doesn't matter.....we lost. It's over.....move on......

This is exactly why the whole season was a waste. Do you all see where Oklahoma is right now? Everyone realize WVU beat them in the Big12 Tournament when Oklahoma was playing for a Conference Championship? Now explain to me how that same WVU team didn't bother showing up for S.F.A. You would think someone would have to answer for that.

WV didn't 'show up' for the SFA game................maybe because they had just beat a top ranked team (Oklahoma) and figured they had a game that would allow them to rest and recoup as they prepared for the next rung on the ladder. They learned from this loss but unfortunately the team and Huggins is now watching March Madness unfold on their big screen HDTV's. Just like us! Huggins? I saw him in the bank yesterday ...... headed straight for the vault.

Can't fault Huggs on this one. If players can't get up for the Big Dance...regardless of opponent...then watching the rest of the tourney on tv is deserved. I still say this year's team was a special bunch...who let the "we are really tough" hype kick them in the rear.

We must remember this same Huggs lost to Dayton in the 1st round and also lost to Brent Solheim ...

I won't look for it... ...but I do recall a flippant remark Huggs made before the SFA game that went something like (to paraphrase) ...

'Sure they play good defense, but nobody does it like us.'

----------

Didn't sound like a coach concerned about preparing his team to me.

I don't see how anyone can say that Huggs was not at fault for his team's bad performance against SFA when the man himself said he failed to get his team ready. My guess is that as bad as they practiced prior to SFA he probably thought they would still find a way to beat SFA and then wake up for the rest of the tourney.

BUT ....Both the head coach AND the players admitted culpability for the SFA fiasco.

The way this team has lost its last two NCAA games still burns my butt. They absolutely should have made the Sweet 16 this year, and the Elite 8, or more, would have been a real possibility. But for some stupid reason ...at the most important time of the year.... another Huggs team acts like they don't understand the nature of the NCAA Tournament.

Huggs needs to recruit smarter basketball players.

I agree with most of your post (that I didn't quote) but this part was rediculous. It's basketball...not chess. ...and plenty of teams do more with a much lower IQ average.

Motivated players maybe... ...motivated and less cocky coach more than likely.

Hurdy has a good point. We've had lots of good players. But only a few heady guys that understand the game well enough to make their teammates better. Butler, Mazulla, Gansey, Herbert are a few recent guys I can think of at the moment.

We don't have that type of player now.

In the end, as a great coach once told me, the player has to dig inside and motivate himself. The coach can prod it along, but the player either looks at each game the right way...or get handed his ass.

You are all wrong about the meaning of special

Was that your dad?

And I am now believer of the Christians always preaching the world is coming to an end soon. Villanova not only made it out of 1st weekend without choking but they have reached the National Championship. People can laugh all they want but Syracuse making the Final 4 is more plausible than Nova in the Championship game. Villanova much like Pitt and Notre Dame are usually 3 automatic gimme picks in the Big Dance to bounce early. Notre Dame made Elite 8 last year and this year. Nova is in the Championship game. This is the definition of "madness" in March Madness and possibly the world soon coming to an end, lol.

Either way, my year of college basketball is over. Not watching Syracuse/UNC as I absolutely hate both teams. And I hate Villanova. I really have no reason to hate them but they are a Philadelphian team and I absolutely despise all Philadelphian teams, pro and college.

So Huggins needs to recruit smarter players ................or so it was stated somewhere. Now, you just go ahead and tell Huggins how to go about this. Schools don't teach the three R's any more and even if they did....................what basketball player (worth his salt) gives a hoot about such trivial stuff. Everybody looking to go pro ..............$tarting the day they arrive kindergarten.

Just a couple of years ago Huggs was saying that his players weren't very smart. Remember that?
Now, after this season, he told us that he was unable to teach his current team good team passing. Then he went on to say that he needed to recruit more skilled players ... specifically he was talking about passing ... and some shooting.

If you can't teach guys how to pass the ball as a team .... they just aren't very smart.
You don't have to be a genius. But you have to be smart enough to know when to pass the ball and where to pass it ... which was a problem with this team at times.

Huggs needs to recruit smarter players. He has as much said so himself. And if they can shoot a little that will help a lot.
