Briles out at Baylor?

was there direct evidence that Briles interfered or influenced a police investigation or covered things up?

Unless there is, this is not right. Florida under Urban Meyer led the nation in arrests. He's trying to Equal that at tOSU from some indications. Why is Briles different?

If there's not a smoking gun on something dirty, Briles will have a job in under a year.

Because in this day in age, they are trying to set a standard that rape is serious. Apparently Nebraska got away with the idea that it wasn't and they are trying to say it is.

It's about culture of a program. Right now, Baylor's culture is as bad as any program I've seen in a while. That should count for something at a faith-based university.

But yeah....he'll be in the SEC next season.

They are different because they have two different employers with different bosses, and it appears in Briles case his superiors are cutting bait and they have the power to do so.

You don't need a smoking gun. He's not being sent to jail. He's being fired. It happens every day to people for far less trivial matters.

Obviously there was a failure of leadership at Baylor. The President Kenneth Starr has been fired. Now Briles is gone. When the leadership fails, the leadership goes.

If you're concerned about people being treated fairly, there are better examples out there.

You're right, he will have another job soon, and that's OK (maybe at WVU?), but for today he'll get his walking papers (reportedly) and just have to suck it up.

I don't like it when people demand "smoking guns". You're allowed to think for yourself, ya know.

LOL - Dana just won 8 games and our fans want him fired. A whole football team gets rapey and we demand a smoking gun to fire the coach?

Compared to Baylor, WVU has good problems.

Come on people!

Wow...I'm actually surprised they went that far, but when a program has acquired such a terrible image I suppose that's the way the dominoes fall....

He comes off as a real dick a lot of the time, so no tears shed for him here....

All good responses, but my whole thing is this. There are a lot of programs where baaaaad stuff goes on and has historically went on. Baylors problems are not unique & small potatoes compared to some other schools reputations and Dennis Ericson nor Larry Coker were fired for off the field problems. Montana at the 1-aa level has a worse rep for the same crimes than Baylor and has there football coach been canned?

This is Not to mention the basketball programs if we're going on % of student athletes that cause problems.

Could be a slippery slope.

Btw I got no love or sympathy for Briles. He has $5 million reason$ minimum coming his way in 2016. He won't starve.

It definitely makes Jim Tressels termination look over blown.

They hired Pepper Hamilton for an investigation so they seem comfortable with the information they have.

Art Briles told me that he is getting $12 Million of what you call.............'out the door' money. Without the cash.............he ain't gonna dash. That's what he told me over a business lunch recently. Any shiny shoes on this here board that can validate my statement needs to speak up. Make it quick....................son!

Baylor's problems aren't small potatoes. It has been established that Briles and the coaching staff violated Title IX procedures. They kept the university out of the investigation process, and instead the coaches conducted the investigations themselves. The comparison to Urban Meyer isn't a good analogy, because there weren't any rape charges under Meyer. No issue with slippery slope here.

Word on the street is that that cowboy's headed for Houston.................wif or wiffout the 'out the door' money. Can you validate this claim for ole Warez? After all...........you got all the pickles.

Sooo does Baylor go after Herman? My Dana to Houston prediction is taking shape folks....

I think they throw a ton of money at Herman and he refuses. Baylor is kind of "new money." I'm guessing he is shooting for a Texas, USC, FSU level program...esp after he was OC at one of those programs before.

Not rape but Aaron Hernandez was suspected in shooting like 3 people in a car, refused to talk to the police or be questioned. Meyer never benched him or kicked off team.

There's also Chris Rainey arrested for felony stalking.
Gary Brown arrested for battery (slapping) a woman
Cam Newton felony burglary
Ronnie Wilson felony use of a firearm in a assault & battery

All in all 31 players over a 5 year period. I listed the most serious and while Baylor had issues, there are as bad of places. No wonder Florida highlighted Teebow with that cast of no character.

Small potatoes was a poor choice of words. Although Montana at the 1-aa level is worse than Baylor based on reports.

The latest I've seen is Ken Starr is being demoted to chancellor and law professor. Briles is gone per tweet to his players, he didn't bother to announce his firing to them in person.

Three starting defensive ends since 2014 all accused of or doing time for rape, not to mention the running back who skated. That's got to be some type of record. Lou Holtz, the ultimate cheat 'em and leave 'em coach never topped that.

Credit Baylor though for having the gumption to do what so many others will not.

Look at Winston/Fla State, Louisville, UNC, USC, Newton/Auburn, Tenn, Ole Miss, Vicks/VPI, too many stories to remember. Guys typically skate by with little to no repercussions.

I'm aware of all the arrests under Meyer. You are missing the point. The issue with Briles is not simply the arrests or attacks. It's that Briles actively tried to cover them up. (The cops were even in on this.) Meyer didn't cover up anything. All that stuff that happened was out in the open. If you want to critizice Meyer for keeping a bunch of reprobates, I'm fine with that. However, there is a big difference between being soft on troublemakers, and actively trying to cover up crimes. Plus, I'll point out again, Briles also got into Title IX violations, which Meyer didn't do, and which is a big pain in the ass for the school.

What's sad is Briles is a piker by Baylor standards. Thirteen years ago Dave Bliss was canned for covering up recruiting violations and drug dealing up the wazoo, then attempted to keep a murder of player who had followed him from his former job to Baylor under the rug.

Give 'em the death penalty. Covering up multiple rapes just over a decade after covering up a murder screams lack of institutional control when it comes to Baylor. The Big 12 could replace them with Houston tomorrow and not miss a beat.

Has to be pretty bad for Baylor to do this. I mean they were an "all in" school for both sports if you catch my drift. The admin made a conscious decision to win at all costs, shelled out the money for big time coaches (and probably recruit$) a new stadium, and now they are firing the coach with the new stadium just gone up and results that have almighty Texas jealous of them? When the facts come out this is going to be awful, could be a death penalty discussion, someone has to get one with PSU getting off...

The reports must be really, really bad for Baylor to pull the trigger and fire Briles. I am certain they did everything they could to keep him, but apparently it wasn't an option.

"We were horrified by the extent of these acts of sexual violence on our campus. This investigation revealed the University's mishandling of reports in what should have been a supportive, responsive and caring environment for students," Richard Willis, chairman of the Baylor board of regents, said in a statement.

Hats off to the Baylor Board of Regents for being people who are committed to the school's mission more than they are to having a winning football program.

I wouldn't go that far. Their hand was forced.

In the words of Chris Rock, "You don't get credit for doing something you're supposed to do".

When someone reports a sexual allegation and you write it down on a sticky note, I don't think you're doing the right thing.

It seems their systems were setup to allow this situation to bloom. Either by mistake or with intention.

Remember these are educated men with tons of resources.

Considering how Art Briles elevated the Baylor program from perennial door mats to Big 12 contenders there must be some pretty incriminating evidence for him to get sacked considering the lengths that some programs go through to win in football these days. If Art Briles where to coach again he would probably end up at some smaller power 5 program that doesn't get allot of media attention or some Conference Usa or AAC school. The baggage that comes with this will probably keep allot of schools away

He'll probably stay in Texas and some school desperate to win football games will take him. Perhaps Tech once Kingsbury is fired? Maybe UH takes him back. He'll be coaching again soon.

Baylor basketball isn't much better. Both programs have had rumors of being dirty, and now that there is proof coming out on the football program. Briles is different because Baylor has not been a powerhouse program for decades. When you go from the basement to the top in a few years, much like SMU, you are going to be looked at with a lot more scrutiny.

I hope WVU ain't set up for no Briles type takedown! Say we ain't ..............Joe. I feel like the Mountaineers run a good clean law abiding program.
