Mitch Vingle: Credit WVU for victory, season
AN EXCERPT:
Saturday was a good sign for the future of the Mountaineers. No seniors; no problem. But it also signaled a time to reflect on WVU's success.
In the preseason, of all the coaches and Associated Press voters, yours truly was the only one to give the Mountaineers a Top 25 vote. That's not to brag. It's to show how almost no one believed West Virginia would finish as an NCAA team.
On Saturday, though, West Virginia was basically playing for a nicer NCAA seeding. In the upcoming Big 12 tournament, the same will be true. The Mountaineers entered the day with the No. 23 Rating Percentage Index slot. Media bracket specialist Joe Lunardi had them holding a No. 5 NCAA seed.
Credit Huggins. He told me at the beginning of the season he liked the team. He took all the parts and forged a steely team. He forged a steal-ey team. With the postseason to go, West Virginia has 343 swipes. The school record is 407.
"I didn't know what to expect when I came here," said Paige, a transfer. "But it's been a fun year. We just keep making a push to the [NCAA] tournament."
