Big 12 Reportedly Set to 'Aggressively Pursue' Further Expansion

From the article linked above:

In the announcement about the Texas/OU departure, Yormark said, "By reaching this agreement, we are now able to accelerate our new beginning as a 12-team league and move forward in earnest with our initiatives and future planning."

The timing of this announcement is especially interesting given the realignment events of the last few days. First, Brett McMurphy reported that Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff was set to visit SMU on Wednesday. He also reported that SMU and San Diego State are the "top Pac-12 expansion candidates."

On Thursday, The Athletic published a fascinating article about the hurdles impeding the Pac-12 from signing a new media rights deal. In the article, the team of writers wrote that "Three people with knowledge of the discussions said commissioner George Kliavkoff is struggling to find partners willing to pay close to what the league is seeking. Two of those sources said Kliavkoff overpromised his members on how many bidders there would be and what dollar amount they could command." They also included this bombshell from a Pac-12 AD:

“(We) don’t have a deal because it hasn’t been good,” said the AD.

With the announcement on Thursday that Texas and Oklahoma have reached a deal to leave the Big 12 one year earlier than expected, the door is wide open for Gonzaga. And Yormark and the conference are expected to aggressively pursue further expansion, a source told Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger on Friday.

According to Dellenger, the Big 12 is aggressively pursuing Gonzaga and multiple Pac-12 schools. Yormark reportedly sees value in a national, basketball-only brand like Gonzaga, especially when it comes to streaming which will only increase in value.

The addition of Gonzaga would likely solidify the Big 12 as the top conference in college basketball, a title some argue it has already earned. It would also be a devastating loss for the WCC.
