Perfect hire..... He looks like a guy that will recruit at the highest level. At WVU, I would like to see someone similar.

Wow

I was wondering what job he was waiting for. A little surprised that it was Texas, I thought he was an East Coast- Midwest guy. Great hire.

Reports last night......

.....were saying that Texas was one of roughly 10 jobs for which Smart was supposedly willing to leave VCU after turning down NC State, Illinois, and others in the past. Not sure exactly how the reporter making the statement arrived at this specific count/conclusion; but assuming Smart got his number, it's my opinion going to Texas was a pretty easy decision (and not because there's anything wrong with VCU; a place at which the right guy can obviously win).

Based on local media reports the deal isn't done yet...

Texas AD is coming to Richmond to talk with Smart and then go back to Austin for the usual tour of the city and school. The rumor is UT is offering 5 years and $14 million. That's pretty much double what Smart currently makes. I'll be skeptical until I see him in a press conference wearing UT gear. Smart is a family man and has as CM points out has turned down other jobs before this. I've always felt eventually he will leave VCU for the right job and the right money. This one might be the right job and the money is certainly there.

This offer seems to have more legs than others.

Maybe Matthew McConaughey will pick him up in a Lincoln Navigator or something.

How is this going to work? He runs up tempo, but has those big guys coming back. Think he could trade the bigs to football for speed? Both programs are just trying to stand back up.

If Shaka does indeed take the job, I wonder if he'll try to turn Myles Turner around, or if maybe Turner will reconsider on his own accord?

I would be very surprised if it were that low.
I think he makes much more than that. I bet its 3.5 mil a year.
Hell Huggs makes 3.5 mil a year here at WVU.

You're most likely right but I can't tell you how many times I've read that about a coach that went on to be mediocre at best when they made it to the bigger school.

Anthony Grant.

You could be right OP but here's some reasons that Shaka might fail at Texas.

Shaka at VCU his teams overwhelmed other teams in that conference with mostly 2 or 3 star players on the other teams. I know the star system ain't everything but it might be a little different level of competition and coaches in this league.

VCU also has a great home court advantage against other teams in that league, but does Shaka have that same advantage now with Texas?

The round robin format might be a problem for Shaka too. Because what might win a game at home might not work on the road, the second time around in the conference.

I did see a post that caught my eye about, will this prepare Big 12 teams for March. Well in my opinion No, why because if you noticed the teams that run this style.

The other teams like MU,Arkansas and even VCU recently has not been advancing as far in March.
The gimmick press usually does not perform well against the Big name schools in the long run.

I will admit though I'm curious to see what he does at Texas and will he try a new style of play. I know one thing though the current Texas beef may not play Shaka ball to well.

As far as the league in March goes the teams all need to up the recruiting, by brining in quality bigs and better shooters. That would be a better formula for a March run over the current teams playing under size or small ball. Yes I'm talking Kansas too.

Kansas 2008 Championship had bigs and decent guards.
Kansas 2012 Championship game had a qty big, but UK had Anthony Davis.

I disagree.

Look at what WVU did in the Big 12 conference tourney..... ....not to mention that we were only a basket or two away from The Elite Eight.
