MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 31, 2015) - The Mountaineer Athletic Club is excited to announce that former West Virginia University quarterback Ben Reed will be the headline speaker for the 2015 Charleston Scholarship Dinner presented by Friends of Coal and Northeast Natural Energy, set for Monday, April 27 at the Charleston Civic Center.

Reed, who saw action as the Mountaineer quarterback from 1984-1987, plays the father of Chris Kyle, the late Navy SEAL in the hit film American Sniper. The film is based on Navy SEAL Chris Kyle's best-selling bookAmerican Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History. [/I]Kyle served four tours in Iraq and received two Silver Star Medals, five Bronze Star Medals and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals for service to his country. Kyle accumulated at least 160 confirmed kills during his military career.

"We are excited to welcome Ben to the annual Charleston Scholarship Dinner," said Matt Borman, WVU Senior Associate Athletic Director/Executive Director of the MAC. "Each year we try to bring back a former Mountaineer who has excelled in an arena other than athletics to highlight the importance of a successful education. Ben was an exceptional student-athlete during his time in Morgantown, and we hope the Charleston community will help us give Ben a warm Mountaineer welcome by attending the 2015 Charleston Scholarship Dinner."

The Charleston Scholarship Dinner is an annual fundraiser for the Mountaineer Athletic Club, the fundraising arm of the West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics pays 100 percent of the scholarships awarded to more than 475 student-athletes.

In 2014, the Charleston Scholarship Dinner Committee generously contributed $50,000 to the MAC, from monies raised during the 2014 Charleston Dinner, to establish the MAC Charleston Scholarship Athletic Endowment. This scholarship is to be awarded each year to a WVU student-athlete from the state of West Virginia. Proceeds from the 2015 Charleston Scholarship Dinner presented by Friends of Coal and Northeast Natural Energy will support this scholarship endowment, directly benefiting Mountaineer student-athletes this year and for years to come.

Complete information regarding this event can be found at MountaineerAthleticClub.com. To purchase sponsorships, tables or individual tickets, contact the Mountaineer Athletic Club at 800-433-2072 or MAC@mail.wvu.edu by Monday, April 20.

I grew up hunting on the Reed farm in Gilmer County.......never met Ben but I can remember some of his uncles (maybe great uncles) who gave us permission to hunt on their land . Somewhere in Gilmer County is a buck mount, like a 23 point buck that was taken on that same farm by Brooks Reed, undoubtedly related to Ben, maybe his grandfather. Ben still returns there every year to hunt deer.
