-Head coach Bob Huggins said that Brandon Watkins will probably miss the entire season as he recovers from off-season knee surgery. He hasn’t ruled it out but it looks like the most likely outcome. Huggins expects Nathan to come back and be productive.
-Elijah Macon is in the best shape he’s been in since he was a freshman in high school said Bob Huggins. The head coach said that he has seen of improvement and he’s been “very good.”
-Huggins said that his team is passing the ball better and sharing the ball a lot more than they did when practice first opened. They are playing hard and working together, it’s just been about getting on the same page in the offense.
-He’s going to need some of the new players to step up because of the injury to Watkins which means there will be time available to the three freshmen and walk-on TyQuane Goard.
-Huggins wants to see Devin Williams pass the ball better, but thinks he can have a great year for West Virginia this fall. The more he can get the ball out and understands where to go with the ball, the harder it will be for teams to double team him to get him looks in the post.
-Marshall transfer TyQuane Goard said that he can take things from where he’s played in the past, but on the other hand his transition is almost like he is a freshman although he does have some experience in the press during his time at Ohio. He’s in the process of learning everything but is happy to be in Morgantown. The strength and conditioning aspect is entirely different than what he was used to.
-The transfer said it was tough not knowing where he was going to end up but is glad that he was cleared and is excited to really live up this final season. He found out about two weeks ago that he was going to be cleared but if he didn’t get the release he said he would have likely been sitting around and waiting for a year before heading off to play overseas. He is roommates with James Long.
-Goard also confirmed that he will be playing at the top of the press but he has learned a lot from Jonathan Holton already especially with getting the teams to speed up and make mistakes.
-Point guard James Bolden said that things have been going well with the adjustment to college but he doesn’t sugarcoat the changes. The strength, speed and tempo is completely different and adjusting to the workouts has been something that has been difficult as well. Bolden is currently playing the one, looking to get the rest of the players open shots and play his role.
-Bolden has known Lamont West since 6th grade and the two played on the same team at the age. A funny story, at the time West was not good at basketball, in fact he self-describes his abilities as “sucking.” But he was able to get confidence in himself and traveled down to Georgia to garner more attention and interest. Obviously that worked, and when Bolden found out he looked at his highlights and realized how much he had developed his game tremendously since that time.
-Lamont West said that he is up from 198-pounds to 210-pounds since he arrived on campus. West described his rise on the court saying that he found himself on the court down in Georgia and actually didn’t even start playing the game until he was in 6th grade. He drew a number of high-major scholarship offers by the time it was over but credits his general love of basketball to his mother who started four years at Purdue and went to a Final Four.
-Point guard Tarik Phillip credited his overall improvement his off-season with how comfortable he is with the offense and the style of basketball that is being played at West Virginia. Phillip is looking forward to making the next step forward this fall.
