Baseball Wins Series with Saturday Victory[/B]
WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 28, 2015) - [/B]The West Virginia University baseball team won the series against Charleston Southern with a 9-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at CONSOL Energy Ballpark.
West Virginia (14-10) has now won five-straight games with nine runs on 13 hits and no errors. Charleston Southern (12-13) plated two runs on eight hits with two errors.
Senior third baseman Justin Fox and sophomore center fielder Shaun Wood each batted 3-for-5, while senior shortstop Taylor Munden, freshman right fielder Caleb Potter and freshman first baseman Shaun Corso had two hits apiece for West Virginia. Munden added two RBIs.
"That was a really solid day all-around. We got three bunts down and we had two or three hit and runs to score runs," coach Randy Mazey said. "Their pitcher, that's as good of a guy as we'll see in the Big 12, he was pretty good. For us to have a day like that against a guy like that, I don't want to overshadow how good of an offensive day that was."
Junior left-hander Ross Vance (3-2) pitched eight innings for his third win of the season. Vance gave up one run on six hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.
"That's the Ross Vance that we know and love. That was super encouraging because the last few times he's been out he hasn't been that sharp," Mazey said. "He was as good as he's been in a year, so I'll feel really good about winning the next time he is out."
Senior catcher Cam O'Brien put the Mountaineers ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to right center field to score Wood.
West Virginia scored four runs on three hits with the aid of two Charleston Southern errors to take a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior left fielder Brad Johnson reached on an error to lead off the frame and then scored as sophomore designated hitter Ray Guerrini reached on an error. Potter, Corso and Munden followed with back-to-back-to-back RBI singles to complete the scoring.
Charleston Southern cut the Mountaineer lead to 5-1 in the top of the eighth on a single to right field by Sly Edwards.
The Mountaineers got the runs back in the bottom of the eighth with a four-run frame to extend the lead to 9-1. Munden and Fox each had RBI doubles, while Johnson had an RBI ground out and Wood finished with an RBI single through the right side.
West Virginia will go for the sweep against Charleston Southern on Sunday at noon. The Mountaineers will send sophomore right-hander Chad Donato (3-3) to the mound and he will face Charleston Southern right-hander Kyle McDorman (1-2).
