Baseball Travels for a Pair of Midweek Contests


MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 27, 2015) - The WVU baseball team will begin a five-game week by traveling to Marshall on Tuesday, April 28, and then traveling to take on Radford on Wednesday, April 29.


The game against Marshall will be at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston and is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch. The Radford game begins at 2 p.m., and will be played at the RU Baseball Stadium


West Virginia (24-17, 6-9 Big 12) is coming off a week in which it went 2-2, winning a midweek game against Marshall and dropping a Big 12 series against Kansas. WVU defeated Marshall, 3-2, on Tuesday, before falling 3-1 on Friday and 9-5 on Saturday against Kansas. The Mountaineers avoided the sweep with a 5-4 win on Sunday.


The Mountaineers hit six home runs over the weekend, including three in three-straight at bats by sophomore right fielder Shaun Wood. Sophomore first baseman Jackson Cramer added two and senior shortstop Taylor Munden hit a two-run game-winning blast on Sunday


Freshman second baseman Kyle Davis continues to lead the team with a .353 batting average, 15 doubles, four home runs and 25 RBIs. Munden leads the team with 10 home runs, while Cramer has eight and Wood has seven. Wood also has a team-leading 30 RBIs.


A pair of freshman right-handers will each make their sixth starts of the season this week. Shane Ennis (1-2) will start on Tuesday, sporting a 3.76 ERA in 11 appearances with 17 strikeouts in 26.1 innings. Conner Dotson (0-3) will take the hill on Wednesday with a 4.14 ERA in 12 games, striking out 35 in 41.1 innings.


Marshall (15-27, 8-13 Conference USA) has won three-straight Conference USA series, coming off a series win over Middle Tennessee.


Junior infielder Aaron Bossi leads the Thundering Herd offensively with a .364 batting average, seven doubles, one triple and 10 RBIs. Senior infielder TJ Diffenderfer is hitting .320 with a team-leading nine doubles, four home runs and 27 RBIs.


Senior right-hander Josh King will get his second start of the season after starting against the Mountaineers last Tuesday. King has a 0-2 record with a 7.43 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 13.1 innings.


Radford (28-14, 14-4 Big South) has won 17 of its last 20 games, including each of its first six Big South series. Last weekend, Radford took two-of-three games against High Point.


Senior infielder Josh Gardiner leads the Highlanders at the plate with a .372 batting average to go along with 17 doubles, three home runs and 22 RBIs. Senior outfielder Patrick Marshall has a team-leading seven home runs and 39 RBIs, while senior infielder Hunter Higgerson has 19 doubles with four home runs and 35 RBIs.


Freshman left-hander Zack Ridgely (2-1) will start for Radford. He has a 4.08 ERA in 12 appearances with five starts, striking out 27 in 28.2 innings.
