Baseball Sweeps ETSU, Wins Big on Sunday[/B]
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 8, 2015) - [/B]The West Virginia University baseball team completed the three-game sweep with a 13-4 victory at ETSU on Sunday afternoon at Thomas Stadium.
West Virginia improved 7-6 overall, scoring 13 runs on 13 hits with one error. ETSU dropped to 7-6, scoring four runs on 10 hits with three errors.
The sweep included impressive numbers both at the plate and on the mound. Offensively, WVU combined for 38 runs, 49 hits, 21 extra-base hits, eight home runs and 34 RBIs. The pitching staff allowed 10 earned runs in 28.0 innings, striking out 30 batters.
Sophomore right fielder Shaun Wood went 2-for-3 with one double, one home run and five RBIs, while freshman left fielder Kyle Davis and junior center fielder KC Huth added two RBIs apiece.
Sophomore right-hander Chad Donato put together another strong outing, bringing his record to 2-2 for the season. He allowed one run on seven hits with five strikeouts in seven innings.
Following 18 runs on Saturday, it only took until the second inning for the WVU bats to get hot again as Wood opened the scoring at 2-0 with a two-out, two-run double to left center field.
After an ETSU home run in the bottom of the second, senior first baseman Brad Johnson doubled and scored following a throwing error by the pitcher with two outs, bringing the score to 3-1.
The lead ballooned to 5-1 in the top of the fourth with Wood hitting his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to center field. The blast scored senior catcher Cam O'Brien, who had singled to right field in the previous at bat.
Despite striking out three-straight times with the bases loaded, the Mountaineers added three runs in the top of the fifth, making it 8-1. Johnson doubled for the second time, scoring senior third baseman Justin Fox. Davis then hit into a fielder's choice to third base and the third baseman made a throwing error, allowing Johnson and sophomore designated hitter Jackson Cramer to score.
Wood drove in his fifth run of the day on a sacrifice fly as part of a three-run seventh inning for the Mountaineers, extending the lead to 11-1. Following Wood's plate appearance, Huth hit his first career home run, a two-run blast to left field.
Davis padded the advantage to 13-1 with a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning, scoring freshmen Caleb Potter and Tucker Cascadden.
