Baseball Falls in Slugfest at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (April 7, 2015) -[/B] After holding a 3-1 lead, the West Virginia University baseball team allowed seven runs in the fourth inning and ultimately fell 12-7 to Maryland at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Mountaineers (18-12) scored seven runs on 10 hits with two errors, and the Terrapins (23-7) had 12 runs on 14 hits with no errors.

"We scored in five innings and they scored in four, but that didn't win the game for us," coach Randy Mazey said. "We were on a roll when the power was out and when they turned the power on, their team turned the power on. They had nine extra-base hits, they just hammered our pitchers today."

Senior shortstop Taylor Munden, senior third baseman Justin Fox and sophomore right fielder Shaun Wood had two hits apiece to lead the West Virginia offensive attack. Munden and Wood each drove in two runs as well.

Munden led off the game with a solo home run to left center field, putting the Mountaineers ahead 1-0. The homer was Munden's eighth of the season and his third to lead off a game.

Fox smacked a two-out double in the bottom of the third and gave WVU a 2-0 lead as he scored on a single to right field by Wood.

After a solo home run to cut the lead to 2-1 by Maryland's Kevin Smith in the bottom of the third, Munden brought the lead to 3-1 with his second RBI of the day, a single up the middle in the top of the fourth.

Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, Maryland had back-to-back-to-back singles with the third single proving to be costly. Senior left fielder Brad Johnson had trouble handling Jamal Wade's single to left field, allowing the ball to go all the way back to the wall to score two runners and tie the game 3-3. Wade, who went to third on the error, scored in the next at bat to put Maryland ahead 4-3 on a sacrifice fly to right field by Justin Morris. Three-consecutive doubles by the Terps drove in four more runs to bring the advantage to 8-3.

Wood cut the Maryland lead to 8-4 in the top of the sixth with a bases loaded sacrifice fly to left field, but Maryland's Kevin Martir homered to left field in the bottom half of the inning to bring the advantage to 9-4.

The Mountaineers scored three in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run home run to right center field by senior designated hitter Cam O'Brien. The homer was the first of the season for O'Brien and cut the deficit to 9-7.

Maryland added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth as Brandon Lowe hit a two-run home run to right field, bringing the score to 12-7.

Freshman right-hander Shane Ennis (1-1) was issued his first loss of the season in 3.1 innings. Ennis allowed five runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk in the start.

Ryan Selmer (3-0) earned the win in 1.2 innings of shutout relief. Selmer gave up two hits with one strikeout and one walk. Martir batted 3-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs, one double and one home run for Maryland. Lowe added two hits with two runs, two RBIs and one home run.
