We as a society have failed ourselves. We have let our kids and ourselves idolize Athletes, Movies Stars, Musicians and other Entertainers and put them up on pedestals as if they are Gods when the truth is they get paid for a service just like we all do. So sick of this BS . We should live in a society where we idolize real people that make this world go round and not some one trick pony that could be replaced by a well trained dolphin.

You forgot to mention that they are way overpaid for what they do. There is no reason for them to be making millions while the people who prepare your food and take care of the elderly are making minimum wage or a little better. Then they all think that because they are famous that it's ok to use their medium as a platform to force their ideas and opinions down the nation's throat. They are no different than anyone else on the planet yet they think they are entitled to express their views and that everyone should think like them. It's no wonder this generation feels entitled because that's what they see in the media all of the time. Trump needs to take it one step farther and instead of saying "fake news", he needs to say "fake media".

To make it better they are not even their own views. They are saying what their publicists believe will sell for marketing. They litterally are "The Product"

Everyone has a right to voice their opinion. I have no problem with celebrities voicing theirs as they are no less a citizen than I am. That said, their opinion only matters if we listen to it and continue to give them the platform of our attention.

I know I am not going to like the opinions expressed on the The View, so I have never watched it.

The problem in my opinion is when we try to eliminate the opinions of others by canceling what we don’t agree with. Sure, there are times when I would like to throat punch someone that says something ridiculous, but there are those that feel that way about my opinions too, I am sure.

Everyone has a right to their opinion, I just wish everyone - including myself - didn’t feel the need to interject their opinion on everything and let emotions dictate their response. Too many times in my life I have said things I regretted because I reacted out of emotion, or didn’t wait to get the full details of a situation.

I disagree with probably most celebrities but when they say something I disagree with or don’t want to hear or something that offends me, I just turn it off. If pressed, I can express myself as needed and I just try to teach my kids to do better.

well said however, I think the bigger issue that the original poster is touching on is that the media gives certain opinions much more coverage then others. They cover it so much that it becomes a prevailing thought and any descent is nearly stifled.

Yes, unfortunately they believe themselves gods and far too many people also set them up as such. I don't get it, but I know about the only thing I can do is stop watching them and buying the products they support. I stopped watching all professional sports. Refuse to buy Nike and several other brands. Etc.

Problem is that I am starting to run out of things I can watch and buy. LOL

Looking back though, I really don't miss those things much at all now. I was hoping that college athletics would be spared the insanity but now I'm not so sure.

Not one human should be idolized. That's one of the downfalls of mankind. Following man blindly like sheep.

That was pretty much the point, or at least part of it anyway. The common person's opinion only gets heard by their circle of friends, or sphere of influence as it is commonly referred to. An entertainer or athlete has the entire world as a sphere of influence by means of the media, so why is their opinion greater than that of a coal miner, school teacher, health care worker, factory worker, truck driver, food service employee, retail worker or any other occupation out there. It isn't but more people are influenced by them than the common man because they have the television platform to stand on. The other point is that they are grossly overpaid.

I am ahead of this curve as I never went to movies much and quit watching or attending pro sports two decades ago as the quality became less as the players got paid more, so I concentrated on college sports and now they want to ruin that by paying the college players. How much is a free college education worth?

I don't know anything about the actual cost, but I am sure it is more than what most people think. They not only get a free education but free housing and meals as well, for 4-5 years. I wish someone would pay my rent and feed me for 4-5 years. Just think of the food cost alone... have you ever seen how much a 17- 22 year old eats? That would break my bank right there.

I feel sorry for anyone that actually idolized these people. They provide entertainment and they get paid what the market will bear for their services. Simple as that. Unless it has a real consequence like the Martin / Keonning situation, which i find WVU's handling of completely embarrassing and pathetic, anything those folks say is just background noise to me.

If one good thing comes of this maybe it is that the sports economy as it was may not longer exist. Hollywood also. When they all start losing 40-50% of their earnings it will wake them up to their true lack of importance in today's world.

In 5 months I have gone from a sports nut, to one who could care less. I may watch, I may not. This virus has really pointed out how much time I wasted on sports.

That should scare the shit out of ADs and teams owners as I know I am not alone.

So you never idolize athletes of WVU nor have you ever had any players in pro sports that you cheered and glamored over.

It's more of the pro players are the ones that have changed attitudes and expect to be pampered.

I thought OP was saying the kids idolize pro players and make them gods.

These athletes act like this because there are no repercussions for what they say or do short of breaking the law. Even breaking the law is sometimes ignored or glossed over.

Am I missing something from someone that caused this post now or are you just fed up with their general douchebaggery?

I'm actually laughing out loud at the irony in this thread.

Letting the public make celebrities with their money. i.e. peoples opinions are only worth what you are willing to pay for them is the definition of capitalism. They have a skill set or product people are willing to pay for. You may not want to pay for it, but this is literally the definition of a free market. Not paying kids their worth in college or saying they all deserve the same payment (education and feeding) by a governing body is the exact definition of socialism.

I forget, which party do you represent?

I suppose we could just pay college athletes a salary and have them
Fund their own education
Buy their own gear
Pay a fee to use a state of the art gym
Pay for their own medical expenses and to have medical staff on call
Pay for their own tutoring
Pay for personal positional coaching

You could, I'm just suggesting a salary cap or predetermined salary or payment based on societal worth versus skill is a central point of socialism. Its funny how what is promoted as fair in this thread is true socialism.

By that definition, the military is practicing socialism and a hired assassin is a shining example of capitalism.

You couldn't be more mistaken.

College football isn't a job to begin with, so there is no "salary" to be negotiated in the first place.

The only celebrity I’ve ever worshipped is Michael P.S. Hayes.

I always view it you get paid what people are willing to give them. Is it a lot of money? Yep. Are people willing to pay them that money? Yep.

I think that's a perfect example. (not sure about pay raises and promotions in the military based on performance) But no one bats an eye at that version of socialism. Because it is for the good of the country, and sometimes that whats in everybody's best interest.

Are you suggesting your benefits for your job are not part of your payment. Any time you have to sign a contract between two sides for an exchange of goods or services I would say that yes it is a job. Maybe not hourly or even a normal job, but I don't see much difference in the work they do from that of a minor league baseball player and that is considered a job. As far as I can tell the only reason not to consider it a job would be the lack of a tax return for the benefits they receive.

People like Marine Corps Sergeant Joey Jones, retired, are the actual Gods, we need more people like him. Legs blown off arm ripped apart and still moving towards his fellow Marines to try to help.

I'll take one of him for every 1,000,000 of them.
Damn dude, I can't tell you how much your post caught me off guard. Folks like him are what make ya damn proud to even be associated and/or related to some of our nation's finest!

You lost me at overpaid. They’re paid market value. Market value may be a result of misplaced priorities in somebody’s (my) particular view, but it’s market value nonetheless.

Ah yes here is the real underlining meaning of your message.....

Irony, do you know thy name?

If you’re trying to saddle OP with that, they’re 2 different people. Lumping one on the other is a product of the same tribal, partisan crap you think you’re cleverly revealing.

Overpaid in respect to the fact that they are non-essential occupations. When Covid hit and they closed businesses, they were among the first to stop working. They are in the entertainment industry and we can survive without them. Market value doesn't mean anything to me compared to how much do people rely on you to do your job. Grocery store clerks, gas station attendants, nurses, day care workers, home care aides and just about anyone else that was deemed essential are worth more than most of those bozos in the entertainment world. People should be paid by how important their job is to other people, not by what someone is willing to pay them. Market value is part of what is wrong with this country now.
