the coaching staff made good adjustments at halftime.
KSU was prepared for the sneak. Why not give Wellman a shot down at the goal line?Crédit where credit is due. The team did look lost to start the game, but coaches made some good calls. Specifically the offensive play call of the delayed hand off on 3rd and 7 during the opening drive was a good call. If it was Crawford or if Shell made a decisive cut vs dancing, it would've been a first down. The Crawford TD was a great call. I think the Howard crouch sneak needs to shelved. I understand he does the squat/kneel thing at the line to audible, but I think there is enough tape for teams to be ready for it. Not much to gain and as we saw, it doesn't take much to hit the ground from that position
As long as you have several other options for that formation, doesn't matter if other teams have seen it.
Instead of handing it off to Crawford - you can fake to Crawford, have lead blocker (Ferns) blow by/through his assigned man for an easy toss from Howard.
Giving to Wellman following Ferns for a quick hit is another option.
Hard to complain about 4-0, but....
1) Yes...Wellman needs more carries. He's not Owen Schmitt, but he's better than the 6 carries he has gotten so far. Maybe they are waiting to use him when we are in a desperate spot, but I'm not sure how much more desperate we could have been than against KState. Shell should be a great short yardage back...but....
2) McKoy is dynamic. His redshirt is torched, so why have him sit? I would argue that he should be getting some of Shell's carries.
Shell has some great moments, but it's like every 15th carry or so. Give McCoy the rock.
3) Make Howard use the whole field. The middle is usually open since teams know we either run it or chuck it. Gibson has bailed out Howard on many occasions, but that can't last forever.
I truly have no complaints on defense because Gibby is making do with our least talented group since 2012. I think he needs to keep dialing up the heat because our CBs can't cover 5-6 sec which is what's happening when we just send 3 DL against 5 OL.
To be fair, I don't think it's strictly Holgorsen who operates that way. Seems like we haven't thrown a pass to a TE since Nehlen retired.Have we thrown a pass to a tight end yet? The most underutilized target imo. I wonder if Dana is afraid that some of the fans, or opposing coaches, would go into cardiac arrest if we ever threw to a tight end.
