After interviewing Texas coach Charlie Strong and two of his assistants, Oklahoma State is no closer to determining whether its former offensive line coach and current Texas offensive coordinator Joe Wickline owes the university $600,000.
Oklahoma State has filed a lawsuit contending Wickline's move to Texas was a lateral one that doesn't include play-calling duties, which would be a breach of his previous contract. If Oklahoma State can prove its case, Wickline has to pay up.
Oklahoma State is arguing that Texas quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach Shawn Watson actually makes the calls, but Watson said he shares the duties with Wickline, according to depositions obtained by The Associated Press.
Strong wasn't much help in clarifying the issue, saying they both call plays but he doesn't remember who called more in the team's 31-7 win over Arkansas in the Texas Bowl.
"I'm a decision-maker," Wickline said, per the AP. "I make calls. I call plays."
One area of agreement was that Wickline is responsible for calling run plays, while Watson handles the passing game. Given that, Strong noted that the way a given game unfolds can affect who has more control over the play-calling.
"If you're playing someone and you're just beating the brakes off them, we'll probably run the ball to get out of there," Strong said, via the AP. "So he's going to handle the play calling."
Watson said he's the voice that sends the plays to the sideline to be signaled to the quarterback, but also said he has "leaned toward Joe" and doesn't recall overriding any of Wickline's play calls.
Texas is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit, but Oklahoma State's lawyers might call additional Texas assistants and players to give depositions.
