The U.S. Navy said on Friday that one of its destroyers collided with a Philippine-flagged merchant vessel southwest of Yokosuka, Japan, in the dead of night and Japanese media reported that seven U.S. crew members were missing.

The Navy said in a statement that the USS Fitzgerald collided with a merchant vessel at about 2:30 a.m. local time (1730 GMT), some 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, a rare incident on a busy waterway.

Japan's Coast Guard confirmed on Saturday that seven crew members of the USS Fitzgerald naval destroyer were missing after it collided with a Philippine-flagged merchant vessel in the dead of night southwest of Yokosuka, Japan.

The coast guard also said the U.S. ship was experiencing some flooding but was not in danger of sinking, while the container vessel was able to sail under its own power.

---someone is getting fired...---

How do we lose 7 men in this incident?
They were probably on watch at the time...

and they were thrown overboard...

and drowned...

Could you imagine the sound it made...

The Crystal is 29,060 tons (w/out cargo) and is 730 feet long.
(it had full cargo, so the tonnage was way higher)

USS Fitzgerald. 9,000 tons, 505 ft long

Guess I can't picture how they weren't spotted overboard. Any which way, horrible tragedy....seems very avoidable too. Am I wrong in that thought?

Multiple human-factors, and technological safeguards, would need to fail simultaneously -on both vessels- in order for this catastrophic impact to have happened at sea.

The land-based equivalent of a freight train (Crystal) hitting a school bus (Fitzgerald). By all rough photographic appearances the port-side bow anchor of the Crystal impaled a portion of the Fitzgerald near starboard side amid-ship just below her bridge. Anyone on the deck of the Fitzgerald would have been thrown from her almost immediately.

The Navy’s 7th Fleet said the ship experienced flooding in some areas and is heading back to Yokosuka. The fleet said the Fitzgerald has limited propulsion, and the ship suffered damage on the starboard side below the water line.

Aikawa said the US ship is partially flooded because of damage. So far no damage or injuries have been reported on the container ship, he said. NHK reported that the merchant ship had scratches on the left side of its bow.

That's one of the real high dollar destroyers, Arleigh Burke class (same thing as shown in The Last Ship). Forget school bus, probably more like sports car.

CDR Bryce Benson 13 May 2017

the Fitz is 1 of 6 Arleigh Burke class ships ported @ Yokosuka, Japan

IMO, the structural damage will remove this ship from service...

I bet they unload the armaments and sail her back to the US for analysis...

there are 3 new ships coming online this year...

best bet would be to part-it-out...

and the crew just changes boats and they sink this one for target practice...

This is embarrassing. The commander of this Navy ship should be court martialed. No excuse for this. The most technologically advanced ship it the world doesn't know a behemoth container ship is in the area? Unreal. More Trump winning.

That's my biggest question. It's one of the most sophisticated ships in our fleet. How did a freighter sneak up on it?

And you're really going to blame that on Trump. lolz

I agree.....We will need a special counsel to find out who trained the commander.

It's not like the freighter is without radios and radar. Not to mention on the destroyer you have 10 people on the bridge who would've had to miss this for it to occur.

I think it was a diversion to cover the sound of something happening under the water.

The freighter most likely had zero chance to avoid given its size and tonnage. I don't think the freighter could "sneak up" on the destroyer. In all the time I spent boating on the Bay I can never remember a freighter sneaking up on my boat.

Honestly, I don't know how it happened.

I'll tell you exactly what happened. The crew on the bridge of this billion dollar war ship with the most sophisticated navigational equipment on the planet were not doing their jobs. Had they been, they wouldn't allow a ship in the area to broadside them.
Totally agree.

Thanks Capt Obvious.

When was this ship built and commissioned? Sounds like yet another OBummer blunder. Thanks for nothing.

... people getting jobs they're NOT QUALIFIED to have in the first place...

anyone working in the govt the past eight years already knows this...

it was an every day occurance during the owebama years...

Admiral Kimmel was made the scape goat for pearl harbor when the real culprit was Washington DC. We blockaded Japan and had all of our ships in one location. That was FDR's responsibility. He had been in office for 3 terms, not 5 months.

Perhaps they had their eyes and ears toward the sky awaiting a surprise buzz from Russia. Actually I have no idea in hell what could have caused it and know nothing about the configuration of the operating crew, but truly suspect some drowsy eyes and habits that have been formed. And I suspects there will be some short careers from chain of command.

YOKOSUKA, KANAGAWA PREF. – U.S. Navy divers found a number of sailors’ bodies Sunday aboard the stricken USS Fitzgerald that collided with a container ship in the busy sea off Japan, but a spokeswoman said not all seven missing had been accounted for.

Searchers gained access to the spaces that were damaged during the collision and brought the remains to Naval Hospital Yokosuka where they will be identified, the navy said in a statement. Seven sailors had been missing, but Yoko Kato, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy in Yokosuka, said not all were recovered.

She didn’t say how many were found.

If all seven of the missing were in flooded compartments, the ship was closer to sinking than the Navy has led us to believe.

The USS Fitzgerald came close to sinking or foundering after the collision with a container ship ripped a big gash under the warships waterline, the commander of the United States Navy's Seventh Fleet said on Sunday.

"The damage was significant. There was a big gash under the water," Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin told a news conference at Yokosuka naval base. Desperate damage control efforts by the crew managed to save the ship, he said.

There had to be some significant failures aboard this vessel. Hope these deaths aren't in vain, and the Navy makes improvements and ensures these mistakes don't happen again

Like most things we need to wait to know what happened and how.
