Rivals.com Mid-Atlantic Analyst Adam Friedman had this to say about Steven Smothers:
"Smothers obviously is an electric player on the field. He's a little bit smaller but he can score anytime he touches the ball. He is just shy of 6-foot and we have him listed at 150-pounds, but he has got to be closer to 170-pounds now. I'm really excited about what he can do in the West Virginia offense. It's an offense that's really wide open and what he's best suited for. The Mountaineers were really center stage for him from early on in his recruitment because of his connections with Tavon Austin and I'm excited to see what he can do."
"He can carry the ball out of backfield, catch the ball out the backfield, play out of the slot whether that's on runs or as a receiver. He is good on short routes, long routes, intermediate routes, it's all about him really getting prepared physically for the next level. That's his biggest challenge. But he's going to have some big plays there is no doubt about that at West Virginia. I expect to see him on special teams pretty early in his career."
