There are 40 NCAA sanctioned bowl games and two more cities want to host a game. What are these folks thinking?

The current system is a joke, or as some "see only sunshine" folks say...a reward,

A reward for what? Last year had teams with losing records participating. If you finish 6th, 7th or lower in your conference why should there be a reward? Really...its like the movement in kids sports to make sure everyone gets a participation trophy, Can't bruise any fragile egos you know!

Sponsors are dropping out. Television ratings are falling. Communities are using tax dollars to prop up their egos...and schools are losing tons of money by accepting a bid. These factors constitute a great argument for a new definition of insanity.

Have to laugh when folks sing the praises of a one point win for WVU over a mediocre opponent in the "we are stuck in the desert bowl" last season.

How 'bout replacing this out of touch bowl system with a 16 bowl playoff season leading to a real NC game? The NCAA is slowing killing bowls with the need to say yes to anybody with enough cash.

Bowl game sponsors aren't interested in 'rewarding' the respective teams for their seasons. Sponsors are interested in the ca$h grab. I have known this for a loooong time. I agree that 'fans' are waking up and are tired of stoking (with cash) the egos of coaches and administrators. Let's let it all play out. Desert Bowl? Let's Bring On The Mountaineers. Warez

Too many bowl games mean too many who cares post season games for mediocre teams. Should mean something...but most don't...particularly with the new "Playoff" system. Yes sponsors are bailing because eyeballs aren't there. Amazes me though that some fans think that making any bowl game...even with a lousy record...is an achievement.

A reward for the players, a chance for the fans to travel to a (usually) nice location to see their team play against an opponent they normally would not play.

I see nothing wrong with it. If you don't like it, don't participate and don't watch.

Do you also have a problem with the NIT in basketball?

Glad you enjoy the "who cares" bowls. Get out of the basement much? LOL You missed the point of the post...but it isn't the first time.

I think it's close to being a good system but personally I would like to see the amount of wins required moved up to 7 and about 10 of these so called bowl games gone. Then I think it would be just fine.

Your point is that players shouldn't be rewarded for their hard work by playing an exhibition game and essentially getting a vacation out of it? Because they didn't win as many games as you would have liked?

Yawn.

vault...that is a good position...a lot like it was before the bowl game glut kicked in. Under your thought, at least an appearance in a bowl game would be an accomplishment as opposed to what it has evolved into. That would lay the groundwork for my thoughts on 16 bowl games as the first round of a true playoff.

For a few years I've been advocating 8 8-team conferences that send their champs to the national playoffs. They could have the 8 2nd place teams play in the national consolation playoffs, sort of like the NIT.

Forget the other bowl games.

Schools lose money going to them. I remember WVU losing $1.2 million by going to the Fiesta Bowl when schools had to pay for unsold tickets.

Can you imagine Elvis Presley or The Beatles in their primes paying venues for the priviledge of providing their entertainment?

WVU taxpayers had to pay 300K or 400K when Marshall went to a bowl game.

The only benefit is that the players get an extra 4 weeks of practice, which gives the coaches a chance to work with returning players for the NEXT season.

I could care less how many kids are being "rewarded" or how many kids get a "participation trophy". What I find weird is a grown man who is angry that kids aren't being shamed to his liking. Why do you even care about "participation" trophies? Did you have a bad experience as a child?

We live in the 'everybody gets a medal' age.... ....even if it's simply for participating.

Here some discussion fodder....
2015 40 bowl games
2005 32 bowl games
1995 18 bowl games

At this rate of growth soon any team that completes a season without a forfeit will go to a bowl.
