I know it’s hard to believe with all the turmoil in the 2023 March Madness but it doesn’t have a chance to rank higher than 11th in total of upsets in history and maybe even lower.
The NCAA website defines an upset as a win by a team of at least five seeds or fewer than their opponent. Seeds closer than 4 seeds are not considered upsets.
Since 9 seed Florida Atlantic is the only team left that can fit the upset limitations and only losses to 2 seed Texas (if it beats 5 seed Miami) and 4 seed UConn would be considered upsets. If Texas beats Miami, it would face UConn so only the winner facing Florida Atlantic would be an official upset if Florida Atlantic beats Texas or UConn.
So the 2023 March Madness can’t have more than 9 official upsets.
At least 10 March Madnesses have had 11 or more upsets (I can’t find a record of 10 upsets, which also would be more than the 2023 March Madness).
