Was at the Duke game last night

I know everyone know this but these are my first hand observations:

1. Only saw one small lot tailgating
2. Wouldn’t even know a game was going on unless you were on campus.
3. Crowd was completely quiet until 4th quarter. It was actually louder when their own team was on offense…. Lol. Truly weak crowd. I mean weak… so quiet when ND was on offense for most of the game.
4. No traffic coming in. No signs coming in
5. No lines going into the game. Walked right in.
6. Just overall a real weak game day atmosphere…. Actually saw other WVU fans there with WVU swag on!!!!!!!
7. Been to UNC games and they are similar just slightly bigger crowd.
8. No, I didn’t pay for the ticket.
9. Last time I go to a Duke game

Sooo proud of WVU! Watched game this am. Huge effort especially by the D! What’s up with CJ??????? White needs more touches

A few thoughts

I had very little expectation for a win. Very little. I actually thought that line, which at one time was over 14, was about right. Boy was I wrong, although it did not always look that way in the first half when we could not even slow them down. I have often complained about our lack of half time adjustments. Whatever we did schematically or mentally, it worked. The kids played their tails off, flying to the ball and playing very physically. In the 3rd quarter, it seemed like we had 15 men on the field. TCU could do absolutely nothing. Really, really happy for NB and his staff and the team.

Vernon had a great post about perspective. When I saw Burks go down, all I could do was pray. Thankfully it looks like it was a scare and not something much worse. The fact that the team suffered this terrifying loss in a hostile environment against a heavily favored opponent and won is quite remarkable. Hats off to the staff and the team.
There were so many standouts, particularly on defense. Vesterinen stood out on the d-line. Kpogba was all over the field at ILB. And Bishop was everywhere in the secondary. They had lots of help from their teammates to shut down a very, very good offense and give us the chance to do just enough to win. We are a bit challenged offensively at every position except for the OL. TCU knew we were going to run it but had a very difficult time stopping it. Loved the read option plays. Greene had his ups and downs but is a leader. He has swagger. He's a guy that you want in your fox hole.

We likely lost at least two key players for the season. I hope Millum and Rimac are ok. We desperately need them. It is wonderful being relevant again.

SIAP: Neal Brown is the Deion Sanders of Appalachia

WVU Keeps rolling

Coach Neal Brown tried to tell all those lazy reporters they'd gotten it wrong by picking West Virginia last in the Big 12, but you know how the lame-stream media is -- never admitting a mistake.

Well, we didn't technically have a vote in the Big 12 preseason poll, but we'll eat some crow anyway. Well, not literally.

The Mountaineers edged TCU 24-21 in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday, moving to 4-1 on the season, with the lone loss coming to undefeated Penn State in Week 1. You know who else beat TCU this year? Colorado. So, we're saying Neal Brown is essentially the Deion Sanders of Appalachia.

LMFAO

Pitt on The Misery Index next up list and love this quote:

"Losing to Virginia Tech these days is an automatic entry into the Misery Index. And the Panthers demonstrated Saturday that they very much in the mix to be considered the worst team in Power Five football."

(And also the reminder that their one win has been Wofford.)

Recruiting/retention, guts/adjustments, my attitude

The win streak, now at 4, would seemingly help us both retain our current players and better recruit against the negativity that has been Neal Brown's future. It may be a bit harder to tell a recruit now that Neal Brown will not be there. Does it matter, maybe not, but I think it helps.

College football has been a passion of mine since I was 17 years old - I'm 64 now. In the recent past, I had become indifferent to it, and numb to the losses and poor play. What I've seen thus far this year has renewed my hope and my spirit. I had company over to watch the last two games with my son and I, deciding not to just watch the games alone because of a perceived bad outcome. In the past four years, we've been OK in the first half of games, but never made the adjustments that other teams did at halftime. We often either didn't score or allowed the other team to go crazy after halftime. Last night, I commented to my friend that in the second half, we just needed to get pressure on Morris instead of rushing three and hoping to get home. The third quarter was exactly what we needed - pressure the QB constantly and make him make rash decisions and lose confidence. Pressure came from everywhere and the results were spectacular. We won the coaching battle with TCU, and I am willing to admit that I didn't see that as a possible outcome for this game. I enjoyed the hell out of the game, screaming and standing up in my living room for the last drive. My wife had to leave the room, and I was my old fan self again. It felt pretty awesome.

Kudos to the defense and to our special teams. Two blocked kicks, a long field goal that should have counted before halftime, Straw averaging 46 yards per punt, great coverage, and - PRESTON FOX. I had all but given up on punt returns the last few years. Fox fields it and doesn't hesitate, picking his hole and going forward. What a fantastic job he's done. Hayes has been solid and accurate, and a big surprise for me - I now feel good about field goals again.

The "next man up" mentality was showcased again, as it has been all year. No matter who goes down, the next guy steps in and performs his job. Garrett Greene went down, Nicco filled in admirably. Our depth isn't great, but you can never underestimate our heart and grit. Our backups are ready and able, which we've lacked for several years now.

Finally, I must admit I thought the current staff was incapable of getting this kind of effort out of our kids. They have proven me wrong, and I am elated at that. I can root for all of these kids who play so hard and who have chosen to either remain on the proverbial sinking ship or hop onto it on the way down. They have earned my support and changed my attitude, and I am grateful. No clue what the rest of the season holds for us, but regardless, I'll be watching and rooting for the team that I've missed like hell for five years. Great job guys!

3rd quarter was awesome last night...

WVU - 20 plays, 141 yards, 1 TD (but two turnovers on downs...one after the TD was reversed), over 11.5 minutes time of possession.

TCU - 11 plays, 1 yard, 0 points. 3 punts.

Adjustments coming out of the half on D - check. Wear down your opponent's defensive front - check (sort of).

Need to fix the red zone crap, but that was a soul-removing effort on WVU's part. Score one or two more times and the game is out of hand...in a good way.

I'll take it.
