--West Virginia defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley said the kids have been talking a while and feel confident with what they're doing and they need to feel comfortable with the communication aspect of it all.
--Formation is the number one thing and that signals alignment, assignment technique and it helps to show them that how similar that West Virginia and Penn State look like on offense.
--Lesley thinks it's a different approach to the portal side of things and they had a better evaluation to what they were actually recruiting so they'll see if they're ready or not. Anthony Wilson has a willingness to be physical and that's easy to coach a guy that will do that. It also can carry over to other guys.
--Lesley said his play count is going to be zero so his team has to be the ones to go out there and do it. The games are hard because you have to be able to do it in that type of environment and leadership is playing and guys gravitate toward that.
--Everybody goes back to when Charles Woods went down but if you look game one to game two, you have one that was out with a concussion, you lost Hershey McLaurin and others. The second week really got them and he doesn't think it will be the same type of issue in the secondary if something unfolds.
--You have some general ideas based on personnel. What is their best 11 and what does it look like? Is it two-tight end one, back, two back, one tight end but you don't want to go down that rabbit hole too much because then you're chasing ghosts.
--Penn State has really good running backs.
--They'll play four between cornerback and safety but the key is who is going to be five.
--Lesley said they're going to rotate at WILL until they get a feel for who is playing the best or has the hot hand.
--Penn State has a lot of tradition so he would like to think that their fans wouldn't hinder their own offense so the communication isn't as critical there trying to get over the noise.
--The use of the tight end is the biggest difference from Yurich at his previous stops.
--Physicality is something that if you don't do it, it's hard to do it on Saturdays. You're not going live on quarterbacks but overall physicality has been good. You have to work the best you can with pass rushing and blitzing and you have to find ways to creatively tackle.
--West Virginia offensive coordinator Chad Scott said that he doesn't know how the guys are going to come out and react. There could be nerves and how it will turn into production on the field right away. They know what they know but they've all had a lot of time to prepare so there are a lot of minds that can come up with different things and some adjustments to what you haven't seen.
--Scott doesn't have a lot of experience going against Manny Diaz but they've had a lot of time to prepare for it. They can expect to see something different early on but people are who they are and they'll get back to their base.
--Work off what you see and adjust as you go. Show the guys what they've seen multiple times and what they've shown but they have to do what they're great at and works well against what they're bringing to them. It's a lot of unknown but the plan is to stick with what they're great at.
--Scott said when you come out first game with the jitters and anxiety you might get some guys fatigued but they want to keep them fresh in the backfield to get the best version. If one gets hot and gets going they'll stick with the hot hand but the good thing is they're versatile in what they can do so it's an opportunity to get the ball in their hands without handing it to them.
--Third down and long they want to stay out of those situations. They've had a good fall camp and one of the things they've done a good job at is being good on first downs and starting fast and efficient to stay out of negative situations.
--Penn State has a good teams across the board. They have a really good linebacker group and have played a lot of football. The two guys on the edge are really good football players so it is a good time for them to get an opportunity.
--No. 44 and No. 11 are both really good off the edge and blitzing on the Penn State defense.
--There is carry over in simulating the type of environment and situations they'll step into such as scrimmaging at night, going the walk through in the morning and doing a pre-game meal.
--Converting it. That's the most important part on fourth down. You can be more aggressive on going for it and you have to be aggressive to score more touchdowns. When talent is equal, technique wins. There isn't less emphasis on first down, but you can be a lot more relaxed on third down knowing you have another play.
--They've taken the next step in the run game and there is accountability. A great team is one that can go out and run the football when you know they have to and they've been able to do that.
--Between the three of Scott, Neal Brown and Sean Reagan they have a lot of information and even if they do something new it won't stray off from what he's accustomed to doing. The plays they are doing are pretty universal based off whatever they can throw at them to get four plus yards.
--Ideally Scott would love for CJ Donaldson to get 15+ touches but as long as he stays fresh they're going to let him roll. He's been able to play multiple plays consecutively in camp after running the ball.
