WVU Men’s Basketball Non-Conference Schedule Announced

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 19, 2015) – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has announced the 2015-16 men’s basketball non-conference schedule.

The Mountaineers will play 13 non-conference contests, including games against Florida, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

WVU will open the regular season at home on Friday, Nov. 13 against Northern Kentucky. The Mountaineers will have home games against Kennesaw State, Louisiana Monroe and Eastern Kentucky. WVU will have two games at home as part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational against either Hawaii, Sam Houston State, Bethune-Cookman or Liberty.

In Las Vegas, WVU will have two games against either San Diego State, California or Richmond. The Mountaineers will play in Madison Square Garden for the second year in a row with a game against Virginia in the Jimmy V Classic.

The Mountaineers will play two more neutral site games in Charleston against Marshall and James Madison. WVU will play road games at Virginia Tech and at Florida in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

West Virginia will play one exhibition game that will be announced later this summer.

“I think Mountaineer fans by now are used to us playing one of the top schedules in the country and this year is no different,” said coach Bob Huggins. “We look forward to going back to Las Vegas against quality competition, returning to the Garden for the second year in a row along with road games at Virginia Tech and Florida. Counting the exhibition, we have nine games in the great state of West Virginia for our fans to see before the Big 12 Conference schedule begins in January.”

The Big 12 portion of the schedule will be announced later this summer.

Marshall is still there-I thought we were done. Kennesaw State? Never even heard of that school. Lots of tournaments - more than I remember us ever playing in.

WVU deserves an easy home OOC schedule considering how we are testing ourselves on the road this upcoming season. However, the road games will prepare this team for the post season.

Top 25 Opponents in the OOC:

Virginia
Cal/ San Diego St

Top 50 Opponents in the OOC:

VT
Richmond
UF

Top 100 Opponents in the OOC:

JMU - returning top 5 scorers from a 19-win team in 14-15. This game will be much more difficult than most will think

Some are unenthused about the overall schedule, but I suspect those of us out west are very excited about the 2 games in Las Vegas.

The last time WVU basketball spent Thanksgiving weekend at a tournament in the Pacific time zone, we won that tournament and later won our conference tournament on the way to reaching the Final Four. Given the generally high expectations for the 2015-16 hoops team, I'm going to take the schedule as a hopeful omen for a very promising season to come.

I'm with you. We have to consider the talent we face each night in the B12.

We have a nice balance you think about the OOC and our Big 12 schedule. We need wins out of conference but not too may cupcakes. The tournament games will give us another chance to raise the RPI.
