FORT WORTH, Texas (May 18, 2024) - In its regular-season finale, the West Virginia University baseball team came away victorious, 6-5, over TCU on Saturday at Lupton Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 33-20 overall and finish the year with a 19-11 Big 12 record while the Horned Frogs fall to 31-19 and 14-16 in conference play.

West Virginia will be the four seed in next week’s Big 12 Championship from Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas and will play nine-seed TCU, Tuesday, May 21, at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Senior Reed Chumley provided most of the offense for the Mountaineers on Saturday, finishing the day with two hits and four RBI, including a three-run home run. Sophomore Sam White and junior Grant Hussey also drove in runs for WVU.

Junior Tyler Switalski threw five scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts to pick up his fourth win of the year. Sophomore Luke Lyman collected his first save of the season by striking out the only batter he faced in the ninth.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first with a two-out rally as White was hit by a pitch before Chumley and Hussey hit back-to-back doubles to open the scoring.

The game remained 2-0 until the sixth when the Horned Frogs put up an unearned run.

West Virginia got the insurance they ended up needing in the eighth with four runs. White provided a run with a sacrifice fly before Chumley delivered the big hit, a three-run home run, his team-leading 15th homer of the season.

Things got a little dicey in the ninth as TCU rallied and nearly tied the game, but a relay from White in right field to second baseman Brodie Kresser to catcher Logan Sauve cut down the tying run. TCU still had two runners on with two outs, but Lyman came out of the bullpen and needed just three pitches to strike out his batter and secure the victory.
