AN EXCERPT:

With Skyler Howard apparently set as the starting quarterback, redshirt freshman William Crest Jr. is looking for playing time. He took some snaps at quarterback in the spring game but also caught three passes for 31 yards and had 12 carries for 47 yards. "He's one of our better football players," Holgorsen said. "We're going to continue to … figure out what he does best, whether that's playing receiver, running back, quarterback, punt returner or kick returner."

One of the defensive starters West Virginia needs to replace is Shaq Riddick, who was the team's top pass rusher. Larry Jefferson, a junior-college transfer who enrolled in January, was a force in the spring game with two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.

The offense needs to replace its top two receivers in Kevin White and Mario Alford. Junior Dakiel Shorts has 69 receptions for 841 yards and four touchdowns in his career. He has been moved to outside receiver and will need to prove he's a go-to receiver. Jordan Thompson has been impressive in the last two springs and is the team's top returning receiver.
