"Multiple sources in the Big 12 told Orangebloods.com on Wednesday the
Big Ten has tried to gauge the interest of Georgia Tech, North Carolina
and Virginia about possibly joining Maryland in the Big Ten. But the
sources said those schools have indicated to the Big Ten thanks but no
thanks - for now.

Some speculate those schools are waiting to see
what happens with the legal battle going on between the ACC and
Maryland over the Terrapins' $52 million exit fee. Maryland's attorney
general filed a countersuit last week seeking $157 million in damages
(triple the amount of the exit fee) for antitrust violations by the ACC
and seeking to have the ACC's lawsuit moved from Greensboro, N.C., to
the state of Maryland."

As soon as the Maryland issue is resolved, depending on the court decision, I expect a mass exodus from the ACC. The B10 and SEC will eat first, then the B12 will.

If you are the leader of an ACC school and you honestly look at the situation--what makes you stay?

People say tradition--but what is that? An emotional thing.

When it comes down to it you compare it to the B1G 10--they have better athletics, better academics and vastly superior financial resources--in fact all of the conferences including the BIG 12 will be earning significantly more money despite the emotional cries of some ACC fans. When you add up the numbers-everyone else makes more money in significant amounts.

In the end that money is what makes the difference. You can't be five years down the road and seeing the huge money difference in these others schools that have built facilities, funded academic aspects of the university, improved athletics all around and say--well, we have tradition. Some ACC schools will eventually set emotion aside and make the choice that benefits those they serve. I'm sure the fanbases will be more than ok when they have schools like Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas State, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Alabama, LSU and Florida regularly visit their stadiums and are getting prime time tv games.
