GRANVILLE — What we all suspected is true.

Monongalia County Ballpark, the new home of the West Virginia Black Bears of the New York-Penn League, is the best ballpark in the short-season Class A ballparks, at least due to a contest held by Ballpark Digest.

The contest consisted of the 32 ballparks each classification, which were broken down into their minor league classifications, with Monongalia County Ballpark competing against the ballparks from the eight leagues at the short season Class A level.

It was run in an NCAA Tournament format with fans voting.

Initially, the ballparks were ranked before the contest and Monongalia County Ballpark was ranked at the No. 7 spot. There were five total rounds of the bracket style contest and the Black Bears received a first-round bye.

In Round 2, Monongalia County Ballpark went up against No. 10 ranked Avista Stadium, home of the Spokane Indians, and took 55% of the votes. In the third round, the Black Bears defeated No. 13 ranked Dutchess Stadium, home of the Hudson Valley Renegades, before beating the No. 6 ranked Centennial Field, home of the Vermont Lake Monsters in the semifinals.

That put them into the finals against Bowman Field, home of the Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Crosscutters, and it was no contest, Mon County drawing 87 percent of the vote.

The ballpark was finished this spring and was first used by West Virginia University’s baseball team, which shares the facility with the minor league team. It gives WVU one of the most picturesque facilities in college baseball.
